Hello!

My little girl has started in prep at our local primary school this year. She absolutely loves it and is soaking up all the things they are teaching her like a sponge. She is reading really well and starting doing maths and Indonesian and all sorts of things. It is a really great school with a lovely community but today on the way home from school after I picked her up she asked me if we could get a Bible! They are teaching her about God and Jesus in religious education. We are not religious, although I did go to a Christian school myself, but I was amazed that they are teaching them religion so early and with no scientific balance! I like some of the values instilled by religion, but I do not like that they teach Creationism with no context or other views. I also think it is very young for a state school to be teaching such things!

  • I am surprised to hear this of a state school but I can’t see that it would do any harm to learn about religion. I don’t think her life will be changed by it. If you’re worried that she is being indoctrinated and not just informed then speak to the school. I wonder if it is an outside group going in and doing more than providing information? Even so that sort of approach by religious bodies rarely works so might not be worth agonizing about it.

  • Prep does seem a little young to be teaching such a subject, they don’t fully understand. I guess you can valance it out with your views, to keep her mind open etc

  • i got my child to take the class and i said to her that if she didn’t like it, she wouldn’t have to do it the next year. i am not religious but i took the approach that it is something that she should learn about just to know what it is. It is a view that many people believe in and knowledge won’t hurt you.

  • I am sure you can get her removed from the class if your not keen on it. With our school we had to sign a consent for the class

  • you actually have to sign to give permission for them to be taught religion in state schools if you do not like it tell your school you want to remove her from the program
