Hello!

The research advises that children under the age of 2 should be having 0 hours of screen time a day and that children up to the age of 6 should be having no more than 1 hour of screen time a day as it does not help with development; television, does not advance problem solving skills, nor does it promote interaction, nor is it conducive to exercise. Television and other screen time is making our children fat.

So why do we do it? Why do we expose our children to so much television? A cheap convenient baby sitter? An educational tool? Social inclusion?

My child phases out when watching television. She will not respond to conversation, she just doesn’t hear. She becomes extremely grumpy when the television is turned off, even if she is given notice. Then the tatys begin.

Sometimes, ironically, I find it easier, NOT to let her watch television.

  • I’ve had the same experiences. My kids now usually watch ‘their shows’ and their off outside. They don’t watch a lot either. Weekends are a bit different, they tend to zone out and crack the grumps when it’s time to turn it off

  • My son gets a fair bit of screentime, but he always interacts with others, he is still active during his screentime and all in all, he has learnt a lot from it :)

  • Not much TV here maybe a movie together on the weekend.

  • Talking to kids about a show is a good way to promote communication and for everyone to be involved in an educational TV show.

  • Totally agree that it’s fine in moderation.

  • We don’t have a TV and we cope fine. It’s great not having to worry if they are having to much screen time.

  • Appropriate programs in moderation on TV are ok for children as long all other areas of their little lives are well balanced. TV can be a good form of entertainment and education if programs and shows are well chosen.
