Hello!

My parents live in another state, and it is hard not having my mum and dad around the corner for advice, babysitting or just their general company. Since having my daughter it has become so much harder. But all I can say thank god for technology. Mum and dad don’t miss any milestones in my daughters life with the help of facetime which we do ever weekend, they can look at her artwork, see her talking and her dancing in the lounge room. What have other people found helps with distance? I rely on technology so much for the support of family

  • I love technology as well, it’s made the world a smaller place and keeps us connected.

  • I couldn’t live without my phone or the internet to contact family. Otherwise apart from that I don’t use my phone for calls or text much. I have found this site MoM a great refuge for me.

  • I love chatting on the phone with my mum who is interstate. But I say thank God for cheap airfares! Flights are so cheap nowadays we can happily fly to visit over a long weekend without it costing an arm and a leg!

  • I’m glad your parents feel that way. My parents act as if we died when we moved states and we talk on the phone but so far haven’t used FaceTime or anything else because ‘it’s not the same’ :-/ I feel like their attitude is making it about 10 times more difficult than it has to be. So in terms of other suggestions for how to make the distance not seem so far, I’ve got none I’m sorry!

  • My family all live in England as does my husbands family and we speak to them every week via Skype it’s fantastic and would be so lost if we didn’t have the ability to do this.
Also we use Facebook so much with posting photos of our family and they post photos of their kids it’s great.

  • I agree with Thank God for technology, but with another slant. Thank God for washing machines, dishwashers, supermarkets, etc. I remember a conversation with my grandmother when she explained what being a young mum was like for her in a small village. No mod cons and no supermarkets, everything made from scratch. Really hard work all day long to feed and cloth a family of 11.
