Hello!

My husband and myself have been travelling and house/pet sitting in and around Melbourne since December 2012. So, as you can imagine, we were very excited about setting off on the great road trip home to Perth, WA. We have a 4WD Pajero and a caravan for this trip, previously we have made several crossings in various motorhomes. Well, I guess we are just not as happy with our caravan.

We bought the caravan new for the trip and on the trek East it took us 7 days to get out of Western Australia! The whole road trip to Melbourne took twelve days. Now, back to the trip West. We finally left Melbourne on Monday at 3:00pm, having had the caravan at the Bayswater RV centre to repair a leaky roof vent. I thought it might be a good idea to ask them to jack up the caravan and spin the wheels just to check the wheel bearings. Lucky thoughts, I guess, because they could tell that at least 1 wheel was kaput!

So, we had to phone around and get it to Lilydale, to have the new bearings fitted. Long story short, both wheels were shot and it is only a single axle caravan.

We are currently, in Tailem Bend,South Australia, our second night out from Melbourne. Having had a very stress free trip so far! So, I hope the rest of this trip home is safe and stress free. We are really looking forward to seeing all our family and friends.

  • I hope you eventually made it home OK. Lucky you got the wheels and bearings etc, checked as they make loud noises (not a happy sound) and eventually sieze up. I hope you stayed on main roads, not sandy potentially salty ones. We borrowed a trailer from a very good friend. On the way home the trailer started making wierd grinding noises. As we had had free use of it previously we decided we would replace the bearings before we returned it. As a relative of mine is a mechanic he agreed to do it. When he put the trailer up on stands to do it he discovered it had been on a beach, and had what looked like what had been wet sand stuck to the underneath of it. It had been borrowed by somebody else who had been told not to take it on the beach again, that the owner we borrowed it from had already changed the bearings previously for the same reason.

  • I want to do this when hubby and I retire. I would love to buy a campervan (a Winnebago is my plan, hubby doesn’t think so) and just drive round around Australia. When you get sick of one town, move onto another. Go out and find all the hidden treasures our country has to offer

  • Not a good report considering it’s a new caravan.

  • Caravans! We have one and always seem to be doing maintenance on it, wouldn’t be without it though, hope your trip was a safe and happy one.

  • That’s not really good for a brand new caravan. I hope you have a safe trip home
