Hello!

I just wanted to write a brief point to other parents around the importance of speech pathologists. My child had said for most of the year she and the other children in her class didn’t understand one particular child. It was often commented on that as he had english as a second language it was something that would just “come” with time. Speaking with his mother, she reports that they finally took him to see a speech pathologist and it turns out that yes, he has some english as a second language issues but also speech delays in both languages he speaks. I’m glad she will be able to take him to see a speech pathologist prior to school starting next year but I can’t help but think if he had seen someone earlier, preschool may have been very different for him – being better able to engage with other children and express himself.

  • Sometimes it can be hard to tell a problem from normal variation. I feel for his mum.

    • yeah especially if it is your first child! you are learning too! well next year might be easier for the little child but i am sure that this year was still great! first school experience!

  • It can make such a difference if you find the right one. For our 1st chid It took us to our second speech pathologist to make a difference, and all it was that she was more of a play based one in our house to a clinical office one, he has progressed so much in year she says she will check in on him from time to time but she no longer needs to see him . We then noticed our third child was dealyed and he has the help he needs to get him on track while in kinder before he starts school.

  • Speech pathologists can really transform one child. The sooner one problem is found (by the parents, teachers or somebody else) the better.

    • Early intervention is incredibly important for kids with any issues.

  • Most schools should be able to make referrals to Speech Pathologists to assist children with speech pathology related issues and any other ESL issues. Good to hear that this child is getting the support they need.

    • It’s good to get on top of speech issues before starting school, it really does make a big difference.
