Hello!

Child number one is full of firsts. Every one a landmark. Even staying up during the night the very first time is new and exciting (and then it quickly loses its sheen). You learn how to wean, live through each tooth cutting the gum, the nappy changes and the other milestones all whilst chasing the precious commodity of sleep.

Baby number two is due soon. You are an expert. You know about all the stuff from the first baby, you don’t need a guidebook or classes.

However, no matter how much you know and have experienced, it doesn’t make it any easier to survive on little sleep, change countless nappies and do all of the other things that you are expected to do as a mother. You can have a pHD in sleep but physically it is very difficult to operate effectively with not enough sleep.

I thought that having a second, I would work smarter not harder. But ofcourse that is not true. I do work smarter but it is still hard. Nothing lasts forever, my mum says but that is not much consolation at 2am.

Ode to sleep.
