Hello!

Recently, my son has started sticking his entire hand down his throat, gagging to the point of making himself sick. This is totally new to me. I understand that young children like to experiment, and most of the time it is sensory (hence why everything goes into the mouth!) But I have never come across this. I get really cross with him when he does it, take his hand out and try to redirect his behaviour. We do this 20 or 30 times a day at least. I am trying to remember that reinforcement helps and being consistent, but it doesn’t seem to stop! Worst part is he does it in the most inopportune places (as children do!) Any tips, ideas or experiences anyone else has?!! I am continuing on and figure it is a learning stage we have to go through, but this one has me stumped!

  • Like others, I’ve never come across this before and I hope your son has since stopped putting his hand down his throat.

  • I would talk to the GP about this. Yes sensory. Have you tried giving him tags. There’s a new tag cloth where kids have sensory to feeling tags. Try him with tags on clothing etc first. Is his develop going great or low side. Xx

  • Maybe try ignoring when he does it. Maybe it’s the attention from you that he’s loving, not the actual gagging. Could be worth a try

  • yeah maybe he wants a reaction or doesn’t realise that he will choke

  • You posted your story a year ago and I am hoping you were able to find help for this. Are things ok now?

  • Have you discussed this with your GP or local Child and Youth Health Nurse? It could be symptomatic of something else? (My youngest has an ASD.) best wishes.
