Hello!

We had enough of the city – I am a country girl from the US but had no idea what was in store for me here! Anywhos – so we found a great lil place to rent in the middle of nowhere – closes neighbours are 2 km away and cows galore!! We were thrilled! We move in to find 1 – there is no ADSL out this far and telstra wireless doesn’t work – so we switch to Optus Wireless broadband to find out that it is soo patchy – one min you are typing away next it drops out and you have lost what you were trying to send. Then we go into town to find out where our post is delivered… ” Delivered ?? they ask… Oh nooo we don’t deliver way out there – you have to RENT a PO box !” What??????? They don’t deliver mail out here and them we have to pay cause they won’t deliver???? So we set it up. Then comes the grocery shopping – one main player in town Woolworth and it has about as much variety as a school tuck shop and the meat is about the same quality as well! Ok so we try IGA and their meat prices are through the roof!! … ok so we eat alot of chicken – when I say alot I mean 4 out of 7 meals a week! Next – hubby needs new jeans .. head into town ..ummm no clothing stores for adults!! Dive into the op shops and they don’t have his size – that will be a 1 1/2 trip to the city…. dentist? city, modem starts playing up – head to your nearest Optus shop – city – we can’t afford to go to the city more than a couple times a year!! And we only go into town once a week for mail and grocery shopping – it is amazing the conveniences you give up for country living * sigh*

  • We moved to the country but did a lot of research first, big priorities are the essential services like hospital, doctors, shopping, internet and phone coverage. We live in a little village of less than 500 people, however our next bigger town is only 25 minutes up the road with plenty of services there and then about one hours drive and we have the biggest inland city in Australia. We discounted a lot of rural areas when doing our research due to the lack of services.

  • It does not seem that you looked into this move before hand. But all is ok you may need satelitte for your internet and possibly for your tv aswell. We have to use Satelitte for both and all is good once you get that set up you can then get into online shopping which we also do for almost everything apart from the groceries. YOur meat you should look into if any of the local farmers may sell you a beast or a side of beef if you do not have your own cattle. We have our own cattle and have the mobile butcher come and slaughter it and cut it up etc for us and then your meat problem is solved as long s you have a reasonable sized deep freeze. If you join the right website you can also get some great bulk deals or sales on most of your cupboard groceries, so then you will just need to start a veggie garden for your veggies and the fruit it might be woolies or IGA. You will also get good at making lists for every trip to town to make the most of it.
Then you can breath in the beautiful country air and enjoy the peacefulness of country life and if you are anything like me you will just love this site as you feel like you have a friend over.

  • I know what its like when you first move to the country… When I first moved I had no rubbish removal service, the car was playing up and I felt so lonely I could cry… but once you become a part of the local community its wonderful. People like to help those in need. Remember there are different types of country living. I live in a quaint little town and love it. So do the children and hubby. Its a gorgeous lifestyle once you find a town/area you really love and you get used to its inconveniences.

  • The bonus of country living is that you can walk outside and fill your lungs with beautiful clean air and listen to the quiet serenity without the hustle and bustle! Enjoy :)
