Hello!

In these times of information overload, high-tech toys and worries about ‘screen time’ I try to remind myself to introduce the simply joys to my daughter. We play at the park, we take a walk and look at gardens and sometimes just sit outside in the fresh air. I’m not saying we don’t watch any TV but for most of the day the TV is off. We have swimming lessons and play group during the week and a visit to the park. Her favourite things to do are run or to go out on her trike. It’s nice to not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this high-tech world and try to remember the simply joys :)

  • Sometimes simple and cheap is the way to go. You sound like you are a fantastic mum.

  • Yes it is taking over for sure and my boys love being on the computer, but they do not watch much tv. I to try and encourage them to get outdoors and go fishing. I have just purchased a metal detector as well so we can go looking for gold just things that I did that I want them to experience.

  • Today we walked in the rain – and it was fantastic. Truly the simple joys are the best.

  • I agree with you. Some of my kids best memories are playing in their grandparents’ gardens. Both sets of grandparents are great gardeners and the kids used to always look for ladybirds, seed pods, snails and other bugs. Funny that just this weekend they were back in their nanna’s garden looking for bugs. funny cos they are now teenagers!

  • I am trying to do this with my toddler. It is quite sad that we have to put such an effort into doing normal things to teach our children that there are other things besides technology.

  • Good on you. We’ve recently started to rediscover the great outdoors, but I don’t know how long I can keep the love going in this colder weather! The pull of the tv is pretty strong when the wind is blowing a gale outside and you can’t face yet another craft project or puzzle!

  • I think it is great for parents too – getting outside and having some fun or doing silly things like playing with play doh or building something with lego with the kids. It is such a stress release!

  • Everyone should remember a world beyond the TV.

  • It’s funny how my kids can be glued to screens but as soon as I open the door to outside they go running out like madmen! Nothing beats the great outdoors!

  • Totally agree. My 5 year old would spend all day outside if she could and when shes inside loves books, real books with pages.
