It is amazing how quickly kids can learn with a little repetition. I have turned our morning walks into an education experience and have managed to teach my 3.5 yr old daughter all sorts of things. So far over a period of time I have taught her to count to 10, the alphabet, the days of the week, 3 bible texts, mine and my husband’s phone numbers and her address. We are currently learning the months of the year and this is one that we have only just started and it is remarkable how much she already remembers – especially considering that I can only do the morning walk on Mondays and Tuesdays when I am off work.
Occasionally she remembers things that I must say that I would rather that she didn’t – my road rage for instance! I have heard her say a few things like ‘he’ll wreck his car doing that’, ‘is that an idiot mummy?’ and even ‘dickhead’ which I have told her is not a word for little girls!
I guess we all have to be careful when little ears are listening and try to teach them good things instead of the worst parts of our personalities.

  • Tell me about it! Sometimes you don’t even remember saying the things they’re repeating! Life’s live tape recorders for sure

  • It’s great to use this special time for learning. I used to use the grocery shopping as a learning time. We would read labels, add up prices, look for numbers. Sometimes I would get them to use a calculater and sometimes we would add up in our heads. It made the shopping trip much less stressful.

  • The son of a friend of ours drove an old car on a farm. When his Dad asked him how he knew how to drive he informed him that he had watched what he did ever since he could see through the gaps in the front seats. He worked out how to reverse a trailer playing with his toy cars, trailers, trucks etc. At 19 he could reverse a medium size trailer Into a space that a professional driver couldn’t. Before he got a semi-trailer license he could reverse one into a receiving dock at a warehouse on private property where he worked in a different capacity. One of the regular drivers couldn’t put it in the position on a few occasions.

    • That is AMAZING! I have enough trouble reverse parking as it is with a normal sedan!

  • I think you’ve found your daughter’s learning modality! Some are visual learners and despite years and years of constant audio stimulation and repetition they just don’t get it. I think she will do well at school since that is lots of listening…. now for the challenge: learning a foreign language! or at least the pronunciation and tones that can be so hard to pick up later in life. Put on the DVDs and headphones and have a go together!

    • She does seem to enjoy language- my parents get Japanese and Chinese students and she seems to enjoy learning new words here and there :).
