How many of you are upset, yet once again, that Jekyll & Hyde, the musical, has been cancelled and will not tour Australia?
In 1995 Anthony Warlow was asked to be the lead in this musical and he put down a most wonderful CD of the songs from the show. He then succumbed to throat cancer and had to pull out, finally coming out in My Fair Lady where he didn’t have to sing much in 1996.
Jekyll & Hyde has been proposed to come to Australia now four times – the latest to open this December with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Jemma Rix and Lucy Maunder and put on by Opera Australia. So now a minimum of 25 actors will be out work not including the theatre staff and orchestral people.
I had the privilege of seeing a production of this show in New York in 1997 – it was the most wonderful production I had ever seen and featured a young Canadian actor in the lead – he was spectacular in the role – but he didn’t have the class of Andrew Warhol as a singer. Pity.
But I am so disappointed that Australia once again will miss out on this most magnificent show especially at this latest hour.
What do other mums think?

  • i never really go to theatre productions as it is a bit far away

    • When I lived in the country [Albury] they used to put on a bus and bring down interested parties to see live shows and friends from Swan Hill and Mildura also had these options. If you are interested in live shows maybe you could instigate something like this in your own township. Euroa also did this and I believe it’s still running from there also and folks also come up from Wonthaggi

  • It’s disappointing, but I understand this is not exactly a rare occurence in theatre.

It is not good it is cancelled though.

  • I had not heard of this show – sounds intriguing. What is the reason for the cancellation?

    • They don’t believe it will be profitable – it would be very hard to do this show, I must admit. In New York there was one man on stage pretending to be two and he carried it off incredibly well. Evidently that’s the only time the show made a profit and it has lost money everywhere else it was put on. Perhaps the producers could see from the actors that it wasn’t going to work??? Don’t know – but there’s another 25 actors out of work + musicians + those who work at that theatre unless they manage to get something else on there in a hurry.

      • Thanks for all of the extra information – It does sound quite interesting – a fan of theatre.

      • Do you go to The Production Theatres offerings – 3 shows a year for 7 – 10 days at the Arts Centre put on by Jeanne Pratt? Very good value – top artists and quite wonderful performances.
