Hello!

My little one started 3 yr old kindy this year, and has progressed in leaps and bounds. She is a few months younger than most of the class, and the teacher now thinks she would be better off repeating three year old next year. I don’t agree – I think she will be fine for 4 yr old, and, anyway, it is too early in the year to decide.
Has any one else had a child repeat three yr old, and was it worth it?

  • You definitely need an explantion from the teacher. If a child is so far advanced unless maturity is an issue your child is going to be bored if she stays in that class for another year.
Starting in 2017, in SA children who will be 5 by the end of April will start school at the beginning of the year otherwise they can’t start until the beginning of the next year. For those whose birthdays are a bit later than that are going to have longer in kindergarten (some states call it pre-school).
Some private schools have been doing this since about 2010 or 2011.

  • My son did 2 years of 3 year Kinder and then 1 year of 4 year old Kinder…. then we moved from Vic to NSW . In NSW and they call Prep (vic) Kinder; so he tells people that he did 4 years of Kinder. Staying back did help him as He was the youngest.

  • Our kidlets can only start at 4 years old here in WA so i dont think they would need to repeat

  • I think its too early to say at this stage. The teacher is recommending this for a reason. Re-evaluate at the end of the year.

  • Trust your gut instinct and it’s a good idea to decide later in the year.

  • Information that I got : 4 years old start pre-schools and 5 years old continue to Kindy.

  • I think its a bit early to decide too. See how she goes and be realistic. If she’s coping socially and having lots of fun, I’d let her go on to four year old kindy next year. I think sometimes kids are held back when they don’t need to be.

  • I would look at it more at the end of the yr, and see how she is coming along

  • as parents we want to push our kids, but ask the teacher why they feel your child needs to repeat, a lot of kids when they are young can’t come due to social reasons, not scholastic.. Just ask the teacher

  • I would not worry about it and relook at it towards the end of the year and see how your chukd is going

  • My son only turned 4 in April but started kindy in the January i was worried at how he would do but I’ve found he has come on leaps and bounds to.
He is due to start school in January and will only be 4 years 9 months.
I think if you feel your child is coping well then let her go up, when i spoke to my sons school teacher she said as long as he can count 1 to 10 and write his name by the time he starts school then all is good.
