Hello!

I had the pleasure of sharing some time with my neighbour’s Grandchild a few week ago. I pulled out the box of age appropriate puzzles and games. We were having a great time. I was observing how this “quiet and reserved” child was taking the initiative. I could see the pleasure on this child’s face as they achieved so much by themselves. I was sitting there if needed however, it became obvious to me that this child is smothered by the well meaning grandparent. When the grandmother came to collect her grandchild, the child wanted to share why they ere doing. Immediately the grandparent stepped in and took over instead of listening and observing what her grandchild was doing and achieving without adult interference. The look of disappointment on the child’s face was immediate and almost broke my heart. I had no choice but to step in and wind up the play session and say goodbye to a broken and dismayed child.

Isn’t it wonderful to be able to stand back and watch. Let children grow and bathe in their own achievements. Let’s not smother and hinder them, hard as it may be.

  • Stepping back is important and watching children develop. Children need to explore and learn and also make mistakes.
