For months I had been told that my baby girl is underweight. This started a bit of a panic with me & made me really stress about what I was doing wrong. I spoke to my mum about it as she brought up us 4 kids on her own. She told me not to stress about it as sometimes babies don’t put on weight for a few months. This was relieving to hear. When she turned 3 half months I put her onto the pouch purses. I was weighing her once a week just to make sure. She is now 5 months & she put on a whopping 1.2kg in just over a week. Just goes to show that the experts aren’t always right.

  • I had similar issues with my daughter when she was born until she was about 9mths. I freaked out so bad because everyone you talked to had an opinion and everyones advice was very different. In the end I just had to shut off from them all and do what I thought was right. Once she started walking, the appetite came and we have never looked back!

  • that is good that your child is putting on weight now. my child wouldn’t eat for a few days when she was a newborn and everyone had me freaking out that something was wrong. One lovely doctor finally told me to keep offering the breast and he thought that bub just had too much stuff in her belly that was keeping her feeling full. he was right and then it was hard to keep up lol

    • i bet that she is growing really big now!

  • The experts seem to just follow one rule and if your child does not fall into the one rule then something is wrong. They are not always correct not every child is the same.

    • I had that experience too when my new born son underweight (three days after born) the nurse didn’t give me to leave hospital until my son weight back to normal.

  • Yeah I couldn’t believe it, I took her for her 4 month injections & brought up that I was starting to give her food from those pouches (farex etc). He was disgusted & said she shouldn’t be having that until she’s 6 months. Again I told my mum & she said bugger what the doctor says, if she likes it give it to her. I can’t believe that the experts can be wrong in so many ways.

  • It is so comforting after you get worried going to all the mothers groups and the maternal health nurse visits when you child gains weight. I went through what you are going through and now my boy is 8 and on the 90% for height and weight! Not that matters, I’m just glad he is healthy.

  • As long as she’s doing nice full nappies and pale wees who cares how much she weighs. I’m getting the other side of it. “he’s on a good paddock… hohoho…” They’re babies, as long as their healthy who gives a stuff.

  • Every child is different. You just need to trust your own judgement as no one knows your child better then you!.
Glad to hear she is gaining weight though

  • my daughter didnt gain weight very well either. Since having my kids i have trained in baby massage and it might be worth exploring for your little one as the massage can help low birth weight babies gain weight quicker. there are massage instructors all around australia that could help teach you the technique. good luck

  • my daughter was the same and would not put on weight my breast milk she vomited many types of formula the same result and than the doctor said let’s try straight cows milk. She was 7 weeks old and at last she started to gain weight and kept it down. The doctor put my second child on straight cows also 7 weeks old as he was classed as a hungry baby and also told me before I went to bed to put a teaspoon of rice cereal in a bottle and give it to him before I went to bed and this also worked a treat
