Hello!

I was terribly disappointed to be in a shop and witness a traveller from a different country being ignored by the sales staff. There was a language barrier and the young man was trying to get his message across and the staff behind the counter were rude and told him to join another queue, he was visibly upset. I stepped in and asked if I could help and with pointing and gesture and limited words I was able to help him out and get the message across to the staff. He was waiting for a cup of coffee and the order had not been put through. The order was on the receipt! I would hope that someone would assist me if I was overseas and needed some help.

  • Good on you. As they say, be the change you want to see in the world. I hope you said something politely to the shop assistants – perhaps they thought he was trying to jump the queue?

  • IT’S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE …well done :-)
Also like to add that I do hope the cafe gave a heartfelt apology and maybe a refund and complementary coffee as I feel it was warranted.

  • He did sound as though he was distressed. However, having worked in hospitality, I know how difficult it can be breaking through the language barrier. If you’re in a busy workplace, it can be hard to spend the extra time needed. Sad but true

    • It can indeed be hard to take the time to assist someone in need and workplaces need to employ enough staff to work with customers. I understand pressures, but just cannot watch someone clearly in distress and on the verge of tears.

  • It was very kind of you to help him out. I wish there were more people ready to help in these situations. Well done!!

    • Thank you – I was happy to help out. I do hope that when my children travel some day that people will be kind to them if there is a language barrier.
