hi, im karen, im 52, and i wanted to share my story with you all.
on jan 10 2016, at the age of 51, i had a heart attack, now let me tell you, i was actually blown away when the ambulance came, and i was told i was actually having a heart attack then and there!
i was thinking, dont be ridiculous, arent i supposed to be doubled over and clutching my chest? thats just it ladies, no you dont!
my symptoms were very vague, a little ache in one arm, off and on over a few days, and a pain in my back, in between my shoulder blades, which i thought was muscular.
As i was about to learn, women often dont recognise the warning symptoms, and this is why more women die of a heart attack than men. We tend to ignore, and soldier on, well i certainly did.
i had a stent inserted, and my artery unblocked. I was lucky, so many women arent.
T his is why im sharing this with all you ladies,,
please, please, if something doesnt feel right, go and get checked. dont think a heart attack needs to be chest pain, it doesnt, particularly in women, a lot will not even feel chest pain.
If this makes one woman aware of heart attack risks, then im so glad

Post your story
  • Hi Karen, thanks so very much for your story and thinking of others as to give them such advice.
You are absolutely correct and this does need to be made aware to other women.
I however find it difficult as I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have arthritis as well. I often experience a sore neck, pain in my shoulder and pains all over at different times …I often wonder if I actually could tell the difference if indeed I was experiencing a heart attack. I guess the golden rule is if in doubt shout out. The ambo’s and emergency would rather see you and tell you all is fine if indeed it is not a heart attack than have to do emergency surgery or lose you all together if it was and you ignored it.

    • Oops , meant to wish you all the very best ..thanks and good health wished for you and yours. :-)

      • absolutely! i have had a few ambulance callouts since my he\art attack, all resulting in a hospital trip,
the ambos always tell me….. we would rather check you and its nothing, than have you drop on the ground because you ignored it!

  • Thanks for sharing your story. I can’t even imagine how scared you was. And your family. We should learn to listen to our bodies, shouldn’t we? It could save our life.
    Take care!

  • Thankfully you got help in time. I always worry I might not recognise or just ignore heart attack symptoms, they can be so vague
