Hello!

The old adage “a stitch in time saves nine” rang true for me today when I was weeding – pulling olive saplings to be precise from around the garden and fence lines of our property. Birds fly from roadside olives (and others) and then scatter their seeds around places they can perch – sometimes in the middle of empty paddocks too.

I’ve seen how quickly olives grow and how HARD they become to control once they have taken root, with thick bulbous stems that become resistant to pesticide and very stubborn to just about anything – even boring directly into the stem and pouring neat weedkiller! Removing the any deadwood is time consuming and the stumps almost impossible to get rid of. Then when you think the tree is killed it grows back leaving you with another job to do.

I’ve also seen how tiny olive saplings are and how easily they can be pulled when they are a few centimeters high, or when slightly bigger they can still be encouraged out of the soil with a mattock / trowel. And in a few seconds they are gone!

The emphasis here is in a FEW SECONDS… that is right. In the time it takes to bend down and pull a tiny stem from the ground I can save myself hours and hours and hours of work later. If you suffer from wild olives spreading in your area I encourage you to spend a FEW SECONDS to bend down and pull those little ones before they take over!

  • So many people love olives, I bet they don’t realise they can be such a pain to some. Good for you for being persistent

  • So true that pulling them out early takes saves the effort later! We have lots of weeds around our house and I’m trying to do 5 a day rather than let it overwhelm me later. Better start somewhere!
