Hello!

Yesterday my family and I decided to go to the local school fete (not our own school). I remember growing up my state school had a full blown carnival with rides, lots of stalls (each one run by a different class), the classics like lob a choc, vote for best dressed teddy, lucky dips, show bags, basketball shoot, school performances and so on. Everyone helped and it was a wonderful jam packed day of fun and excitement for the children because everyone put so much time and effort in..

Sadly, cannot say the same about the fete we attended this year (and the others we have been to). It has changed to a very small 2 or 3 stalls and the band playing…I guess it comes down to parental involvement but I am disappointed they are nowhere near as fun and exciting and wish my children could have enjoyed it and experienced it as I did growing up

  • I have to drag myself to our local school fetes, I go only for the kids and to support the school. They are very disappointing nowadays though. I think that could be because of insurance issues. I went to a small school, but we had awesome fetes. Same can’t be said for my kids school fetes

  • every school is different. Our school does a charity day where the year 7s all have to get in a group of 4 or 5 people and they have a stand and it is up to them what they do. some do cakes, some second hand books and toys, some food and others are games which are fun like throwing a sponge at the head teacher, apple bobbing, all the old traditional games. it makes a lot of money and a lot of the effort is put to the kids to make their stall the best.

  • My school still has a traditional school fete with all the fun rides and traditional stalls like cake stall, lob a choc, trash & treasure, face painting and lots of food stalls. This years fete was a huge success and the local community came out to show their support.

  • Agree there is quite a noticeable difference between school fetes of yesteryear and today. I wonder if there will ever be an resurgence of them or whether those type of social events have been bypassed for online socializing.

  • Unfortunately our school no longer holds fetes due to the work involved for such a small monetary gain.

  • Some our local private schools have them every year and our public school has a much smaller one every year. It only happens due the dedicated parents and teachers invloved and a year of planning before hand. Parents have to run the food stalls. Some rides are organised and fun is to be had. The problem is the insurance involved(people wanting to sue at the drop of a hat) and people not surpervising their own kids and wondering why they get hurt. I wish the old days were here for fun to be had.

    • oh yeah i suppose that does change people’s opinions on having events like this.

  • They do seem smaller – but since I rarely have the capacity to more than donate stuff – prizes, cakes etc – I don’t feel able to criticise.

  • yes i agree. my school was amazing and had all the events and parades. Now my daughter’s school is buggered! they don’t even have basics and it sucks big. This is the best school in town but they don’t have fridges for lunches, not enough seating and definately don’t focus on the school community in terms of events. A school dance randomly here and there but nothing else really. Easter parade only for year 1. Schools are definately not the same in the community as they once were and this is a big shame and it probably all comes down to no funding.

  • We are lucky to still have the full fetes with everything you mentioned in your post. We love them and buy lots of good things and have so much fun. It does depend on volunteers. It is such a good feeling to support schools.
