Hello!

My child has problems spelling and focussing in class and I had visited the local dyslexic association to get an assessment to determine what the real problem is and what we can do to help. They offer a course called cellfield and I was told it was great to help the child to read. Now my child’s reading is ok it is the other things which are not so good. I was given the hard sell on this course and told the price tag of $3000 for a 2 week intensive course will improve their reading by 2-6 years and I can start this week. The video I was shown there was glowing reports of how successful the programme was… I went home to do some more research on it and found all reports were the same. It is only tested and reported by Cellfield themselves. No outside testing of its effectiveness has taken place and there for no negative comments on the internet. There has been no clinical studies done to say its long term effectiveness. they claim to re wire the brain and increase their reading age by 2-6 years in 2 weeks. I spoke with some professionals about this and they too said there is no external research / trials/ tests on the effectiveness of this programme and I was advised not to go ahead. I was very grateful for this honest feedback but my warning to parents is – it is tempting to take advice of what seems a professional company but be wary of claims and if they only offer this one programme then of course they will sell it to you like crazy. always do your own research and ask other professionals especially before you depart with obscene amounts of money.

  • The charge for the testing is not covered by Medicare of private health even if it is arranged by a Dr. There is an organisation In SA called SPELD that does assessments. There is more than one type of dyslexic too. I found that out because a young lass who used to live across the room from me was assessed. Being a teacher’s aid in a special needs class in a different school she was able to find out how to assist her daughter. THe Mum had approached the teacher the previous year and was told there was ntohing wrong – that she wasn’t behind. First week in the new school year her parents were approached to attend a meeting to work out a plan to help their daughter. It took a different teacher to report her concerns to the Principal.

  • agreed – my son was misdiagnosed three times in his little life by specialists and eye doctors, get second and third opinions until you are confident and trust your gut!

  • I had a similar experience with a learning programme. The salesman gave my kids ‘tests’, of course they didn’t do well on them. So then came the sales pitch. $12 000 over 3 years it would cost us, if we didn’t do it we were BAD parents, or that’s how they made us feel. We signed up, thought about it, and cancelled it within 48 hours. Close call
