Hello!

I have just recently had my first child and had the task of finding a name for her. I did my research and searched through naming websites and books waiting for one to jump out.

In the process, I read through so many suggestions chains on social media and forums. It actually started to upset me, because some people are naming their children such ridiculous things, in an attempt to out do eachother. It makes me feel terribly sad for the children, who have to live their lives in the shadow of a name that sets an impression before people have even met them.

As a person that grew up with a different name, it is a struggle. Yes, I like that it made me unique. But no, I didn’t like the pause before my name when a teacher tried to figure it out, having the sniggers around me when it was said wrong. Having to correct mispronuniation and spelling, explain where it came from.

Naming a child is a daunting task, I know. But some people need to remember, this is a human being, not a pet. Poor little Pilot Jet-Inspekter…

  • There are a lot of weird names out there now. Not like years ago when we had original ( more normal ) names.

  • Aren’t some names dreadful, feel so sorry for the kids. The worst culprits are the rich and famous. I’m all for unique, but not ridiculous

    • You are right – the worst culprits are the rich and famous. I often gasp at some of the names.

  • My name is not unusual in my parent’s country but I haven’t met anyone else here with my name. It is only tricky for me when I’m waiting to be called for my turn somewhere, and have to concentrate hard to try and figure out if that could be my name being called.

  • My ex partner insisted we spell my son’s name the same way as it is in his culture. I tried to explain that Australians would naturally pronounce the silent “s” in his name. When you pronounce the “s” on the end of his name it turns from a boys name into a girls name. My ex got his way and we spelt it as per his culture. My little boy also has 2 silent letters in his surname, which is European and totally changes the way it’s pronounced. It is strange that even after you correct people they still pronounce it wrongly. I totally agree with the lady who commented that she would always wait for the inevitable silence as the teacher tried to work out how to pronounce her name as I feel that for my son as well. Don’t get me wrong my sons name isn’t weird it’s just the added French “s” at the end that confuses people and I totally understand. I wish I had put my foot down, but it can’t be helped now and it’s part of who my son is :)

  • The myriad of different spellings drives me up the wall especially for party invites! I had to get the office lady to spell them all out correctly for me, who knew there were five different ways of spelling Lachlan! lol

  • Some people use absolutely crazy names , they don’t think of how the kids will grow up, they have to live with that name forever, yes my kids have different names and spellings but all names that will grow with them, I changed letters to give them uniqueness so that they are individuals and you don’t see their names everywhere but am proud to have beautiful names without the that’s a weird crazy name. Use uniqueness without being silly.
