Did you know that at full term, mother has almost 2 pints of blood pumping into the uterus every MINUTE? The amount of fluid exchange between amniotic fluid, fetus & mother reaches almost one gallon (~3.5 Liters) per hour at term!!! Amniotic fluid completely surrounds the embryo (as seen in this video). In this way it insures freedom of movement for the embryo, space for development, absorbs blows, & keeps the embryo from sticking to the placenta. It’s a clear, watery fluid that is filtered out of the maternal blood. A large portion stems also from the fetus itself (from the skin, the umbilical cord, the lungs & the kidneys). The makeup of the amniotic fluid is thus quite complex, with many maternal & fetal constituents. This includes water & electrolytes (99%) together with glucose, lipids from the fetal lungs, proteins with bactericide properties & flaked-off fetal epithelium cells (they make a prenatal diagnosis of the infantile karyotype possible). From the 5th month the fetus also begins to drink amniotic fluid. Close to the end of the pregnancy the amniotic fluid is replaced every 3 hours! There is now evidence that amniotic fluid may have more use than only as a diagnostic tool & may be the source of a powerful therapy for a multitude of congenital and adult disorders! A subset of cells found in amniotic fluid & placenta has been isolated & found to be capable of maintaining prolonged undifferentiated proliferation as well as able to differentiate into multiple tissue types encompassing the three germ layers. It is possible that in the near future, we will see the development of therapies using progenitor cells isolated from amniotic fluid & placenta for the treatment of newborns with congenital malformations as well as of adults! #MEDspiration Written by: @medspired @medspiration ©‪10/26/2018‬ All Rights Reserved. “They said I couldn’t do it.” by @brittfishstories ⠀ I shot my 50th birth early yesterday morning, and this triumphant VBAC mama had us all in tears. ???? With her first baby, she ended up in a section after pushing for three hours with a diagnosis of failure to descend… and was told by docs that her pelvis/body wasn’t capable of birthing a baby vaginally.⠀ ⠀ So she pursued midwifery care at a local birth center, sought chiropractic care from 13 weeks onward, allowed the Lord to bring together her perfect birth team, and did everything else she knew of to make her dreams of a VBAC possible. But even then, when it came time to push, her fear was palpable. “This is when it all went wrong last time,” she told us through tears.⠀ ⠀ But she looked her fear in the face and pushed through it… and birthed this beautiful 8 pound 2 ounce baby girl with a nuchal hand like the total rock star she is. She almost couldn’t believe she did it even as her baby seemingly sprung out of the water and into her arms… and her repeated cries of “They told me I couldn’t do it, but I did. I’m just soooo happy!” made for truly one of my most memorable births to date with some of my favorite images ever. Couldn’t have picked a more perfect birth to celebrate 50 with. ????????❤️ . . Special thanks to midwife Sarah Foster, assistant midwife Lydia and @tulsabirthcenter – as well as Janell Zimmerman with Sowing Wellness for helping this mama rock her VBAC! So grateful for our Tulsa birth community! ???? #birthwithoutfear #vbac #vbacwithoutfear #optionssupportrespect

  • Birth is such a miracle! How amazing are our bodies to be able to grow a baby, no matter how you deliver it!

  • A close friend of mine gave birth naturally to a baby still in her “sac”. One of the midwives had been doing the job for over 20 years and had never seen one born in the sac so asked permission to take a photo before the sac was removed.

  • Have had both C-section [emergency] and natural births. And I’ll take natural with all the pushing, grunting and whatever over C-section any day. Of course there were no photos in my day, but I’ll bet the emergency C-section I went through after already going through 15 hours of labour would not have been pretty to shoot.
