UK supermarket Tesco in Sussex are trialling a ‘quiet hour’ every Saturday morning in an attempt to help autism sufferers do their shopping.
Every Saturday morning, for one hour the lights will be dimmed and in-store music and announcement systems will be turned off.
Tesco says if the quiet hour is a success, they will look at rolling it out across all their stores in the UK.
The announcement follows a survey by the National Autistic Society UK that showed supermarkets were considered the ‘most isolating environment’ for sufferers of autism.
I think we should applaud Tesco for taking this step in the right direction and I would like to see them expand this across all stores and lead the way for other shops to implement this too.
