Have you ever felt a bit of brow envy? Maybe one of your girlfriends has the perfect eyebrows? Or you feel a twinge of jealousy at those magazine models whose well-defined brows just bring out their eyes so powerfully?

When you’ve got kids, finding five minutes to go to the loo in privacy can be difficult, let alone finding the money and time to go to a beautician! Besides, who needs the extra expense when you can do it yourself at home, right?

That’s true, but without the knowledge of how to properly shape your eyebrows you could be heading for a brow-tastrophe! No-one likes that plucked chicken look, do they? So to ensure you avoid common brow blunders, we’ve compiled a step by step list of the best brow shaping practices.

1. Take measurements

The first step to perfect eyebrows is to map out the correct measurements of your brows. A classic way of doing this is to use the other end of a makeup brush to line up the outside of your nostril straight up to where your eyebrow should start. The arch point is where your nostril and pupil line up, while the end point should be the same height as the brow starting point, and will line up with your nostril and outer eye. You may like to use a brow pencil to mark these different points on your face.

2. Choose your brow shape

Even though you now have your measurements all plotted out, there is one other important thing to consider, your face shape. Different face shapes look better with particular brow shapes. It makes sense, right? Some women’s brows have an accented high arch, others are more curved, and some are relatively straight. It’s best to follow your natural shape when manicuring your brows.

3. Use a brow template

If you are struggling with choosing a brow shape, or if you want a preview of how different shapes would look on your face, a good option is to use brow templates. These are stencils that you put over your eyebrow and then colour in using a brow pencil. Often they come in a pack with a variety of different shapes to choose from. You never know, just trying a different brow shape than usual could really make your eyes pop.

4. Remove stray hairs

Find your chosen form through removing excess hairs in the brow, but proceed with caution. Make it a rule only to pluck or remove hairs from underneath the brow to start with, to avoid barely-there eyebrows. Be careful not to remove hairs that are actually in the line of the brow itself. A good way of checking whether the hair is one to remove or not is to stroke all the hairs in their natural growth direction with a brow brush or your finger.

5. Add extra length or weight

If you were born with virtually invisible or very short eyebrows, don’t worry! You can easily give the illusion of extra weight or length by using an eyebrow thickening product. Or you may prefer to use the more traditional eyebrow pencil or brow powder. Either way, find a solution that works for you. You do not have to put up with faint eyebrows!

Now have fun with it!

As with any new beauty regime, experimentation can help you find the right look for your particular brand of gorgeousness. When all’s said and done, finding a style that makes you feel beautiful and sexy is what beauty is all about. Having amazing eyebrows may seem like a small thing, but the feeling of confidence that comes with looking your best is worth investing a little time in.

  • So, I did not touch my eyebrows until I was 30. A friend insisted she had to get at them. I now have waxing done every 3 to 4 weeks. They really don’t bother me, but apparently I have nice shape and they don’t require a lot of work. I was haunted growing up by my 2 older sisters who plucked their eyebrows to nothing. It frightened me so much at how ridiculous they looked, that I would not touch mine. Now, I’m happy with their shape and maintenance.

  • Nah, I never felt envies about the shape of somebody else’s eyebrows. I don’t use make-up, so why would I spend time to work my eye brows ?

  • Who has time for all this. I don’t.

  • My eyebrows grow really quickly and drive me mad!! I get them waxed but could really have that done weekly which I cannot afford. Is threading more effective?

  • I get my brows threaded once a month and pluck any strays inbetween the time to keep them looking clean :)

  • When I was young and single I would have my eye lashes and brows every now and painted and manicured, especially before holidays. Many years ago I ditched all make up and absolutely can’t be bothered anymore about eyebrows and lashes
