A substitute teacher is under fire, after she told a five-year-old cancer survivor that she couldn’t be pretty bald.

MaKayla Welsh was playing with her hair when the teacher called her out in front of the whole class, shares Daily Mail.

‘The teacher thought she was pulling her hair out… The teacher told her if she was bald, she wouldn’t be pretty,’ her mother, Nicole Welsh, told WPXI.

MaKayla was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago, but she is now in remission.

Her hair continues to fall out because of the chemotherapy she underwent in her treatment.

As soon as MaKayla came home and told her mother about the teacher’s comments, she called the school to complain to the principal and superintendent.

Mrs Welsh says that the administrators were understanding and ‘promised she’d never go through anything like that again’.

Mrs Welsh has some words for the teacher though.

‘Be careful on how you word things to children… Words can hurt a lot more than anything else. They can stick with you forever,’ she said.

The school district has refused to comment on whether the teacher in question will face any consequences for the comment.

Poor little girl. I think no matter if the teacher knew her background history with illness or not, she should still never make such a comment.

Would you be outraged?

  • oops! she really should not have said anything in the first place! maybe the school should have filled the teacher in on the students that she would be taking care of.

  • The moms have commented well and I agree.
Teacher was totally out of line so very wrong and never ever should anyone call out a student in front of the class and make comments on their looks.
Do hope MaKayla is doing well and kicked this leukemia in the butt for good.
Grow strong and healthy MaKayla you are beautiful inside and out. xx <3

  • This is why so many young girls have image issues

  • Wrong….very wrong. You never make a comment like this to a child. No matter what and even if she was a child that was sitting there pulling her hair out….you dont not say things like this.
Hopefully she has learnt a lesson and will be a better person because of it.

  • Wrong and cruel in so many ways – poor girl. Why are girls still being judged and called pretty? Surely they are at school to learn and not be pretty! Teacher education is clearly needed.

    • A conference and mediation is needed for this teacher and family.

  • Regardless of the situation the treacher should not have said anything like that.
At 5 y.o. a parent of somebody authorised to collect the child should have been spoken to if the teacher was concerned about it. Possibly the girl’s head is itchy or sore. To her it’s probably away of soothing her head. At some schools now the children are collected from the classroom at the end of school every day. They are also taken to the classroom in the morning.

  • The teacher was wrong to comment on appearance in that way, whether she knew the girls’ history or not.
