Comments on Samantha’s FB post praised the teacher:

Finally more teachers are catching on to this! Our school has been like this for years, it’s sooo much better!

I like this teacher. She has her head on right. I can understand why your post has so many shares.

I do believe that kids are required to do too much homework at home and should be focusing on being kids and playing while they are still young. I think reading is enough.

Does your child have to do homework?

  • This is excellent. I do agree as im stunned with then number of children that say they eat dinner in front of the tv or in their rooms

  • Yes I agree with this teacher.

  • YES! Far too much homework for children these days. I don’t think it’s that essential in primary school. High school is a different matter. Primary kids should be focusing on emotional and social goals as well as having fun and learning about learning. Make school enjoyable for them! There’s plenty of time for them to knuckle down and “work” when they get to high school.

  • My boys were total opposites when it came to doing their homework. The eldest would wait until the day homework was due then panic the morning they had to hand it in. My youngest would do his homework the minute he got home and made sure it was finished before going to bed. The eldest is now a qualified electrician and the youngest runs an online proofreading business. I love this teachers’ thoughts

  • I’ve never had problem with homework. My son had to read a book each night for primary school or learn his words or times tables. No problem there. The odd assignment as he got to Grades 5 and 6. I think there needs to be some preparation for the shock that is Year 7. Kids that haven’t had any homework will be in for a rude awakening once they start High School.

  • Yes, I totally agree ! Wonder if this idea is for primary school or also for secondary school ?
I grew up in the Netherlands and we didn’t have homework at primary school back in the years and still now they haven’t.

  • Agree with this teacher – it’s better to show your children and let them help with cooking the family tea, how to knit, sew, and play with them in the yard than have them do homework that they should have learnt in school. Hope it goes to all schools, especially now as the no longer teach crafts and cooking ‘home science’ in my day.

  • I agree with this teacher. My daughter is in high school and is absolutely swamped with homework.

  • My daughter who is in grade one only has her bring home reader for home work. My husband who is a teacher sets small amounts but it is usually what he is required to set but the schools curriculum.

  • Totally agree with this with young ones.

  • She’s absolutely right. After so many hours at school, kids need to relax and connect with the family in different ways. Homework should always be kept at a minimum.

  • As a teacher and a parent, I agree. Often your child is too tired after school and are not capable of doing any more work. Spending time together as a family, talking, going for a walk etc…. is so important, especially when your children are younger- as they grow up so quick!

  • Every parent and every child will want this teacher!

    • I agree with work that is not completed being finished at home.
