Australian teachers are being trained to identify key phrases that could indicate children as young as five are showing transgender tendencies in the classroom.

Primary school teachers are encouraged to listen out for phrases such as ‘I feel different’, ‘I’m born with two spirits,’ or ‘I’m androgynous’ from their students, shares Daily Mail.

The training, being conducted by gender identity experts, is contributing to what they claim is a 236 per cent surge in students wanting sex changes.

The claim comes as childrens’ hospitals across NSW say there are increases in children believing they are the wrong sex, according to the Daily Telegraph.

As many as 74 children aged between 6 and 16 have been referred to gender transition clinics by hospitals this year, the publication reported.

Gender counsellor Dr Elizabeth Riley said one per cent of all students were transgender, regardless of whether they made the transition or not.

‘I teach the school how to deal with these children with special needs and to treat them like any other child,’ she said.

Dr Riley said she had given advice to 40 public, private and Catholic schools over the past three years.

Dangerous fad!

However, Western Sydney University Professor of Paediatrics John Whitehall said the gender identity experts were promoting a ‘sad, tragic and very dangerous fad’.

Medical treatments, which often involve hormones, can interfere with a child’s brain and body development, he said.

He said mental illness such as ADHD and depression were often misdiagnosed for gender restlessness and should take precedent.

  • I don’t feel that this is okay. Why and how is any of the schools or the teachers business what gender a child identifies as? What is the point of this training other than to single them out at a vunerable age? All these kids need is to be accepted for who they are. Their parents would be well aware of what they feel or identify as. Nothing can be done medically at this age to facilitate gender change and research suggests that this is a stage many children go through during development (and end up sticking with their birth/physical gender). A program like this would be better aimed at the age when gender identity is close to becoming set and then ONLY as a source of help and support to the child.

  • Transgender tendencies at the age of 5 ? Don’t think this is right.
The development of the personality is a long process and goes from baby through adulthood !
When you would start discussion about gender at age 5 and act on that, you could bend things in a total unnatural and wrong way and destroy the natural development.

  • Wouldn’t it be healthier to teach the staff to treat kids who are “showing signs of being transgender”, like they are just as welcome as any other kid? I think its quite dangerous to put so much pressure on them when they are so young to identify their gender. If they want to experiment with different clothes etc then create an environment where that is fine and normal and ok. Just take the pressure off and let them be kids.

  • If children are definitely showing signs of depression, have very short attention spans even at school age and are disruptive or violent, that should be investigated as they are common symptoms of ADD or ADHD.
Transgender symptoms as young as kindergarten I find very difficult to comprehend.

  • If we’re treating them like any other child then why be on the look out for early identification? Just leave them alone!
