Teenager pleads guilty to manslaughter of Hobart mother, pregnant mum Sarah Paino who died in a car accident in January.

A 15-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of pregnant Hobart woman Sarah Paino.

The court was told the teenager showed little signs of remorse during his interview telling officers he was sorry for his actions, reports 9 NEWS.

Ms Paino, 32, died in January after her car was struck in Hobart’s CBD by a four-wheel drive driven by the teenager. Doctors managed to safely deliver her unborn baby boy, Caleb, Who is “just an image of Sarah”.

Her two-year-old son, who was in the back seat of the car, survived the crash unharmed.

The teenage driver has been in custody since being charged with manslaughter and motor vehicle theft.

The three passengers in his car – a 15-year-old boy and two girls aged 15 and 12 – have also been charged with motor vehicle theft.

Her partner Daniel Stirling admitted he would never find anyone to replace his lost partner.

“I loved her, still do. I don’t think I’m going to find anyone that will come close to her. I don’t think I really want to,” he said.

UPDATE 20 May

Prosecutors are asking for the teen responsible for the death of Sarah Paino to be charged as an adult.

The now 16 year old who plead guilty to the charge of manslaughter laid against him just yesterday, prosecutors are saying that he does not deserve the leniency of the Youth Justice Act.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Daryl Coates SC says that this was “just bound to happen”.

“It may not have been Ms Paino coming through the intersection but the conduct the accused entered into was highly likely to cause an accident where death was going to result.”

Mr Coates says that the boys prolonged ‘risky behaviour’ on the night means that he should not be tried as a child, as this would lead to him receiving a maximum penalty of a mere two years detention.

He has advised Justice Helen Wood that jurisdiction should be exercised under the Criminal Code and Sentencing Act, as the Youth Justice Act does not in any way commensurate with the offence that has been committed.

  • Heartbreaking indeed ! Yes, think they should be charged as adults….they wanted to behave like adults in the end and didn’t show real remorse.

  • definitely!!! WHY should they think they can play ADULT games and not get charged as that?? They tore apart a whole family and show no remorse? SORRY MU!M AND DAD doesn’t cut it for this time!!

  • They need to be charged as adults and held accountable. All of them not just the driver. Makes me so angry as the others are free and acting like nothing happened. They don’t seem to have any remorse at all

  • he probably doesnt understand the pain he has caused. I hope one day he grows up and understands just how bad his actions have affected this poor family. Such a horrible thing to happen :(

  • Such a tragic accident. For a few minutes of ‘excitement’ for these teenagers, a young mother and mother to be lost her life. Her partner lost the love of his life and their 2 gorgeous little boys lost their mum. While I don’t think those kids meant for this to happen, they need to realise that stupid actions can result in tragedy. They certainly need to toughen up the laws for young people. Manslaughter isn’t enough

    • Hopefully he will have the book thrown at him with other charges too. I don’ t know the laws in other states. He should also be charged with driving unlicensed, a stolen motor vehicle, without undue care + something in reference to the baby. It is a miracle he survived. He should be transferred to an adult prison when he reaches his 18th brithday – hopefully before. They also need to take into account the damage done to the family and add gaol time for that too. In some respects the elder boy will forget his Mum which makes it even sadder and more traumatic.
