A 14-year-old boy has revealed how he earned $200,000 playing the video game Fortnite.

Griffin Spikoski, 14, hit the big time about nine months ago, when he uploaded a video of himself beating a well-known Fortnite gamer to YouTube, garnering 7.5 million views.

The teen spends eight hours a day playing Fortnight on weekdays, after taking online high school courses, WABC-TV reported.

On weekends, he plays the video game as much as 18 hours a day, which even he confesses is too much.

‘It’s kind of like my job,’ Griffin explained.

Griffin has become a celebrity of sorts due to his YouTube channel, which has more than 1 million subscribers.

Viewers tune in to watch the young gamer, who goes by the name Sceptic, compete in the online battle royale game.

Money has rolled in from subscriber donations, online ads and sponsorship deals.

‘I want parents to know that, you know, if their kids do enjoy playing games and they have a passion for it and they’re really good at it, they should treat it as any other sport,’ Griffin’s father Chris Spikoski said.

Griffin says he plans to save the money he’s made, and someday spend it on college or a house.

  • Dream job for how many people? My son would be stoked if he could make a decent living from playing games

  • It’s amazing how many gamers make a living making videos on youtube. And how many become millionaires from making other types of videos. It does give options other than a 9-5 job, though being shy would make it difficult.

  • Not all gamers are going to rake in big bucks. 90% will be gaming for hours in the dark no fresh air and no money coming in.

  • Great that he earnt all that money but 18 hours a day on the computer on weekend days and 8 hours a day on week days is too much. He is 14 and is missing out on so much.

  • Hopefully his parents guide him well. Not everyone can have a hobby which pays money.

  • Well, at least he’s planning for the future. I’d only see this as a short term job…

  • Oh dear. I mean, $200,000 sounds great if you’ve already passed through high school and uni / TAFE etc and got a career.

  • I think it’s ridiculous that people can become “famous” for doing ordinary things and that our kids getting addicted to watching them play games.

  • What happens if the company involved goes broke? Is there a risk he may end up with a debt. Sometimes things like this are too good to be true and can end in disaster

  • Wow, huge amount if money! But what’s happening with his school work and social experiences with peers? If he’s playing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, there’s not much time for other things

    • Excellent question – particularly about school.
