A teenager’s addiction to a popular spicy snack played a part in the removal of her gall bladder.

Rene Craighead, 17, from Memphis, US, developed a pain in her stomach after eating on average four bags of different spicy chips a day, ABC 30 reported.

She went to hospital where doctors were left with no choice but to remove her gall bladder.

Doctors later revealed her consumption of the snack had contributed to her problem, shared Yahoo 7.

Her mother, also Rene, was surprised her daughter’s guilty pleasure led to such significant consequences.

“I was surprised that my daughter was sick like that,” she told US television station WREG.

“She loves them. Every time I go out she says, ‘Bring me back some hot chips.’ I want to make her happy, so I brought them back.”

Gastroenterologist Dr Cary Canvender agreed the chips were a causing factor, telling WREG he sees “tons of gastritis and ulcer-related stuff due to [eating spicy chips].”

He estimated 100 children a month across the US experience similar problems.

  • Interesting. I struggled with gallbladder issues for years and had no idea thats what it was until i became so sick that I ended up on hospital on an iv drip of antibiotics for a week while they battled to get on top of a bad infection in my gallbladder and then I could have the surgery to have it removed.

  • She was probably eating more than one packet at a time. besides the spices the chips have a very high salt content which in itself will do a lot of damage to other organs as well.

  • I’m sure that with eating that many bags of chips a day her gallbladder isn’t her only problem and her mother really should have been censuring that. You shouldn’t even be snacking that many times a day let alone on chips of any kind.

  • I wish her well and a speedy recovery but that many bags a day, that’s just silly.

  • Um, the parent thought it was okay for the child to eat 4 packs of these a day? All because the child asked for them? SCREAMMMMMM. Really?!!!!

  • Didn’t even think eating spicy chips could cause gall bladder problems. Hope she gets better soon and cuts right back on the spicy chips.

  • A ridiculous amount of consumption of the chips per day – one a week should be the total consumed.

  • It’s not just chips! We have to be careful with all of the convenient foods available from the supermarket. I needed my gallbladder removed at age 16, I had a balanced diet and found out I had an issue after completing high jump. I honestly thought I landed wrong but after complaining for two weeks in agony my mother finally took me to the doctor.

  • 4 bags a day! No wonder she got sick – but that is a serious problem to be caused by chips …

  • Not strange.
Now mum should make her happy by denying her this food.

  • I am not surprised by the outcome with amount of chips consumed – organs cannot handle that much consumption of this type of food.

    • Should read..in this case organs cannot handle this amount of consumption.
