Not so long ago the concept of sending a text from a phone probably didn’t even cross our minds. These days it’s a common way of communicating for teenagers.

To save time teens use acronyms and abbreviations rather than spelling out words.

Here are 51 abbreviations every parent should know:

  1. 459 — I love you
  2. 2moro – Tomorrow
  3. 2nite – Tonight
  4. ADR — Address
  5. GR8 – Great
  6. BROKEN — hung over
  7. IMHO – In My Humble Opinion
  8. 9 — Parent watching
  9. ROTFLMAO – Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off
  10. CD9 — Code 9 – it means parents are around
  11. 99 — Parent gone
  12. BRB – Be Right Back
  13. 143 –I love you
  14. ILY – I Love You
  15. B4N – Bye For Now
  16. 420 — Marijuana
  17. SITD – Still In The Dark
  18. 53X — Sex
  19. F2F — Face-to-Face
  20. DILLIGAS – Do I Look Like I Give A Sh**
  21. BFF – Best Friends Forever -or- Best Friend’s Funeral
  22. WTTP – Want to trade pictures?
  23. LOL – Laughing Out Loud -or- Lots Of Love -or- Living On Lipitor
  24. GYPO – Get your pants off
  25. LYLAS – Love You Like A Sister
  26. LMAO – Laughing My Ass Off
  27. TWD – Texting while driving
  28. DBEYR – Don’t Believe Everything You Read
  29. KPC – Keeping parents clueless commonly used
  30. L8R – Later
  31. IPN – I’m posting naked
  32. 8 – Oral sex
  33. TMI – Too Much Information
  34. BCNU – Be Seeing You
  35. DOC – Drug of choice
  36. IRL – In Real Life
  37. STBY – Sucks To Be You
  38. ASL — Age/Sex/Location
  39. SWAK – Sealed (or Sent) With A Kiss
  40. CYA – Cover Your Ass -or- See Ya
  41. NP – No Problem -or- Nosy Parents
  42. GNOC — Get Naked On Cam
  43. RBTL – Read Between The Lines
  44. OIC – Oh, I See
  45. OT – Off Topic
  46. 1174 — the meeting place, meet at
  47. WYWH – Wish You Were Here
  48. J/K – Just Kidding
  49. IWSN — I Want Sex Now
  50. TYVM – Thank You Very Much
  51. TTYL – Talk To You Later -or- Type To You Later

  • As a millennial, I can assure you ladies that only about 10% of the abbreviations on that list are actually used in common texting language amongst young people. And of those 10%, only about half have been translated correctly here. I’ve gotta say, coming from a young person who has never heard of or used 90% of the lingo on there, this list is genuinely hilarious.

  • Majority of these were new for me and I was born in the 90s. :( gotta be careful these days alot of those abbreviations were a bit shocking.

  • What is even more scary, than the number of acronyms they use, is when kids put these acronyms into assignments / homework / writing their resume etc.
