Mum’s warning after her son broke every bone in his face doing a scooter trick that went horribly wrong.

She is now urging parents to ensure their kids wear helmets.

Hayden, 12, was playing on his scooter at a skate park in Bridgetown on Sunday when he attempted to jump over the top of a traffic cone.

But when the back wheels of his scooter clipped the cone, he became airborne before face planting in to the concrete.

He broke his jaw, nose, eye sockets, cheekbones and his sinuses and suffered bleeding on the brain as a result of the fall.

“The only thing I remember was airing it and then waking up in an ambulance,” Hayden told 7 News Perth.

“I hit my back wheel and then I went face first into the floor.

“Everybody should wear helmets because they save lives.”

His mother Mel Waller hopes his accident will serve as a warning to other kids to protect themselves in similar circumstances.

It was distressing. Scary really,” she said

“If he actually had a skating helmet on part of his head wouldn’t be so fractured.

“Our message now is for kids to wear a helmet at all times and they are cool, basically.”

Sounds like one very lucky boy!

  • Wow….kids will always be daredevils so all the safety equipment is essential….even so they will still find ways to hurt themselves.

  • He is one very lucky young man. I know it could have been much worse but it was still bad enough. I’m glad he now sees why he should have worn a helmet.

  • At least the young man himself has learned of the dangers and acknowledges the fact. Hopefully his story will stop others from doing similar things.

  • Oh my goodness, so scary. I knew a young man who was skateboarding and he hit his neck on the curb, ended up a quadriplegic.

  • Wow! Yes, everyone should definitely practice safety first.

  • Just demonstrating why wearing a helmet is so important. It has been a safety message for many many years that helmets should be worn when riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. Parents just need to reinforce those messages. This is the reason why.

  • As soon as I saw the headline I knew it was going to be because of not wearing a helmet. This was drummed into me as a kid. No helmet and no leaving the yard!

  • Boys will be boys and it is hard at times to get our children to do the right thing. Hope everything turns out ok for him and others learn.

  • How awful for this boy. This is why adults need to lead by example unfortunately too many people won’t wear them young and old.
