Across cultures and civilisations, from east to west, the art of fermentation has been part of a healthy culture for as far back as humankind can remember.

Fermented foods can be dated back to as early as the Neolithic period, from the Egyptian empire, Greek, Roman and even the Far East kingdoms of China and Japan.

Fermentation is a process by which the organic composition of the food is super charged, transformed and enhanced by means of enzymes and complex organic catalysts produced by moulds, yeasts and bacteria.

Aside from the fact fermented foods taste great there are plenty of reasons why you should include fermented foods in your diet and here are some of the reasons:

1) Fermented foods contain probiotics

Fermented foods or drinks like kombucha are rich in good bacteria that will be absorbed by the digestive system.

Fermented foods will actually combat bad bacteria in your system, they help in slowing or reversing some diseases, they improve bowel movement, and aid digestion to improve immunity.

2) Fermented foods are economical

You need not spend more on food. Fermented foods, due to the process, have a longer shelf life. It is very inexpensive to create fermented foods by using simple ingredients such as sea salt, vinegar, and cultures.

Including these kinds of food will also save you from buying separate supplement products because of the rich vitamins and nutrients you are getting.

3) Better absorption of food nutrients

Having a good digestive system will help you absorb nutrients and minerals better. Aside from that you also improve your metabolism for weight loss.

4) Fermented foods are packed with flavour

Fermented foods enhance the flavour of every food. It excites your sense of taste and improve your appetite.

Fermented food and fermentation is also a large part of international gastronomic fusions.

Koreans takes pride of their kimchi, Indians have amazing chutneys, Scandinavian’s love sauerkraut, Europeans have been enjoying wine for ages, have you ever tried an authentic fish sauce in Thailand? It’s just too good for words, the list goes on.

Whether you eat fermented foods for your health or for the taste it is an inexpensive and relatively simple way to enhance your food options by adding layers of flavours and textures to any dish.
