The bizarre new trend in naming babies.

According to Nameberry, a number of gem-inspired names have recently climbed the popularity charts.

Current favourites such as Jade and Ruby have plateaued, while Crystal, Amber and Diamond have fallen out of favour.

Instead, the names of the moment are a mix of vintage comebacks and modern jewels.

Opal, Amethyst, Goldie and Ivory. Emerald and Pearl are also on the list, as well as Sapphire and Jet.

They’re even big for boys, with Onyx becoming one of the fastest-rising boys’ names in 2019.

  • How is ths bizarre? They’re far from the weirdest names I’ve heard.

  • Each to their own I guess and the child becomes the name and the name becomes the child. I quite like Ruby, and Jet.

  • I’ve never been one to follow trends. What’s the point of being on trend with a name in 1990, when it’ll be off trend by 1991?! I’ll just stick to what I like, that doesn’t go out of fashion

  • My first thought was that when a girl named Diamond gets engaged the fiancé will come up with something cheesy like ” I don’t need to buy a diamond because you already have one”. LOL. To each their own though

  • I personally love this. I am all for different names and these sounds really good to me. I like natural names as well, such as Sage, Willow, Moon, Oak, River. Just something charming about them

  • Each to their own, but these kids need to grow up and become professional adults with these names

  • The only gem inspired names I like are Amber, Ruby and Jade.

  • I do love Ruby as a girl’s name. I tend not to buy into fads though and choose a name with special meaning.

  • Oh, yeah, I’d definitely name my kid Lapis Lazuli…

  • Not my thing for baby names. But each to their own

  • I like some of them, and why not, no different from using flower names like Daisy, Violet or Iris. Better than some other names around, just keep the spelling simple and easy for the child that is all that matters.

  • I am not a fan of them but not my kid being named so it doesn’t matter!

  • So glad these weren’t around when I named my children.

  • I’m really not a fan of these names, much like alcohol themed names, they seem really trashy to me.
