Adults were shown the picture of a bus and asked which direction it was travelling.

Is the bus travelling to the left or to the right? Look carefully at the picture again…

Still don’t know?

The Independent reports Pre-schoolers all over the US were shown the same picture and asked the same question: but 80 per cent of them were able to give the correct answer.

The bus is travelling to the left.

When asked “why do you think the bus is travelling to the left” the pre-schoolers also came up with the same answer.

“Because you can’t see the door to get on the bus.”

Children, with more recent experience on buses, are often much better at answering this question than adults – a demonstration of how important former experience and cues are in interpreting a situation.

It has also been suggested that a child’s holistic and creative way of thinking is beneficial when it comes to providing the solution.

This is a US based story so – Correct me if I am wrong, but I do think it is the opposite in Australia?

  • I got it right but for a different reason lol I looked for the mirrors, they are very cleverly hidden

  • I first thought, “Well, there’s no door and not enough detail, therefore its impossible to know the answer”. I never thought of it in terms of looking at the bus from the other side and with tinted windows. Clever kids.

  • It’s pretty obvious once you know.

  • I would have gone to the right.

  • The windscreen at the front at the bus is always shaped round a fraction where as the rear usually appears to be straighter. The doors aren’t visible at all.
Going by the angle of the wheels it is turning left. We don’t know where the photo was taken either. We have yellow buses for schools in some parts of Australia. It is signwritten on the front and back of our buses and isn’t visible from the side of the bus.

  • Clever kids! I didn’t think about the door until I saw the answer. And yes, ours is on the opposite side to the US. Funnily enough I was watching a cartoon earlier where Americans got confused and went on the wrong side of the bus in Australia, looking for the door, haha!

  • Very interesting, thanks so much for sharing.

  • I first thought it would be travelling to the right because we drive on the left hand side of the road and the bus had just passed the intersection. Then I read the article and it said the question was asked in the US. I immediately changed my answer for the same reasoning but that in the US they use the opposite. I had this reasoning as an adult driver but did not realise that the kids were correct which ever country it was asked in.
    Cudos for the kids.

  • As the bus is travelling in the US, it would have to be travelling to the left as it is travelling on the right side of the road and we in Australia travel on the left.

  • I agree with you – here in Australia the bus would be travelling right, but the reason is still the same – you can’t see the door to get on

  • Smart cookies those kids, I didn’t look that way !

  • Interesting about the door,l would have said right!

  • I agree the ANSWER in Australia would be TRAVELLING TO THE RIGHT. If you look at the picture, and ASSUME we are travelling on the LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD, then the door (which we can’t see) would be at the FRONT of the bus – which, in this case, would be on the RIGHT. Yeah … total opposite to the correct USA answer, but nonetheless accurate. Have a great Valentines Day! mom130269
