Hello!

A quote from the fabulous Tina Fey’s autobiography Bossypants that made me laugh out loud was “You know you’re getting old when the first thing you do when you get home is take off your pants.”

I’d like to change the start of that to “You know you’re pregnant when…”

It came on slowly. First it was goodbye pencil skirts, then as my bump began to make itself known, no more snug fit jeans. Gradually, over the course of my pregnancy the most beloved of my key wardrobe items have been stowed away at the top of my cupboard – the fabulous high shoes, the slick shift dress, the wide leather belt, basically everything with a zipper or a defined waist. I thought this would be temporary, that these pieces will soon be back in action and that the dreaded maternity wear would be gleefully taken to the Salvos just a couple of weeks after delivery.

But something strange came over me at about week 22 of my pregnancy.  All of a sudden the minute something feels the slightest bit tight or pinchy my day is absolutely ruined. And since then there has only been one priority when it comes to dressing myself – comfort. With a capital C.

Garrett is now used to seeing a trail of clothes between the front door and the bedroom as I make my nightly beeline for stretchy pants and a baggy top. The mere thought of an underwire bra makes me shudder and there’s no more coveting high-waisted skinny jeans. Nowadays it’s those yoga pants with super stretchy elastic waistbands that make me sigh with longing. I’ve even taken to wearing leggings under any skirt, no matter the length, not for modesty’s sake, but because thanks to recent weight gain at the hint of warm weather my thighs have developed the tendancy to rub. And let’s face it, at 30 weeks pregnant I don’t have it in me to bend down and pick up something off the floor, let alone put up with a bit of chafing.

Who am I??? What happened to the teenage girl who would defiantly leave the house without a jacket on a winter’s night for fear of ruining the impact of my ‘look’? Or the career woman who would confidently spend all day in a halter neck top with a too-tight strapless bra underneath it?

Until now, I’ve been wary of the ‘Mum’ look – you know the one, basic tee, cargo pants, comfortable shoes, few to no accessories. As a young women, I viewed these pram pushing types with curiousity, wondering what it was that caused them all to adopt such a uniform appearance.

But now, as I sit basking in the comfort of my new ‘Aaah Bra’, wearing a maxi dress that is blissfully unrestrictive, I’m actually starting to wonder if I’ll ever be able to go back to choosing fashion over comfort, or if I will ever really want to!

  • That is very endearing! I couldn’t help smiling! We have all been there I’m sure, some, like me for the second time after retirement. Oh comfortable clothes! Bliss! Don’t worry though, we still have enough pride not to dispense with our selection of clothes to wear out in public :)

  • So true. I went from wearing heels every day and dresses to track pants and thongs during pregnancy snd for several months after birth. Happy to say I’m back in dresses now but the heels are too dangerous chasing a toddler
