15 years ago, I started my journey with baby essentials. The weekly stock up where I’d pile nappies and wipes into my trolley with startling regularity. Back then I had just one little man but even then it seemed as though I was spending a disproportionate amount of my grocery budget on some really basic stuff – nappies & wipes.

Another 3 babies came along in rapid succession after my first and soon I looked more like I was starting my own baby shop than doing my weekly shop. And the money I was spending was not worth thinking about.

Of course back then, my options were limited to the major brands in major supermarkets – unless I wanted to chase random specials at pharmacies that were nowhere near where I lived!

So I was stuck with paying a premium for pretty basic essentials and scrimping and saving on other areas of our budget just to make ends meet.

15 years down the track it should be quite a different story. There shouldn’t be anywhere near the amount of cost required to keep the nursery cupboard stocked up with baby essentials. Parents have so much choice in where they get hold of all the essentials and how much they ultimately pay.

Of course, my babies are babies no more so I can’t really give you first hand experience that is up to date.

What I did do though was talk to one of the Mouths of Mums members (Lisa) who is currently trialling and reviewing a range of baby essentials products from ALDI’s Mamia® range with us.

Lisa has a 4 month old bub and an 18 month old toddler so nappies and wipes are a big chunk of her shopping trolley each week. We asked her if she felt as though switching from her ‘before review’ brand of nappies and wipes would make a big difference to her budget.

She jumped at the chance to share her experience and the comparisons she had done since the product review.

Surprisingly, Australian parents are still often paying top dollar when it comes to nappies and other baby essentials. And Lisa was no different.

Before trialling Mamia® nappies and wipes, she had been a ‘big brand’ nappy and wipes buyer, saying “I never thought about it too much but made an assumption that the more expensive products must be better quality.”

“Since participating in the Mamia® product review, I’ve discovered that a cheaper price doesn’t mean a cheaper product”.

We asked Lisa to do a price comparison on nappies and wipes. She was blown away at the annual savings she would make by switching brands.

“These types of savings mean that we’ll actually be able to head up the coast to visit family this year instead of staying at home. That’s a huge bonus for us,” Lisa said.

So now I find myself wishing there had been this kind of choice when I had my babies. The savings are huge and based on the reviews that are flying in from MoM Members, Mamia® nappies and wipes are absolutely up there in relation to other brands on the supermarket shelves.

  • Wow, they are massive savings! Disposable nappies and baby wipes were too expensive when my kids were babies

  • The modern re-usable nappies are very hard to get dry. They are basically a nappy/pilchers with a washable insert – “pad” that goes into a “pocket that fits into it. Thge part that fits against your baby’s skin is actually apart of the nappy that is stitched to the “Pilcher” which is hard to get the stains off. You definitely need more inserts than the outer part. They are “do not tumble dry”. I certainly would not put the outer part in the dryer. The outer is like a type of plastic and it think it would melt if against the dryer bowl if it got too hot.

    • Nappies can be a huge cost for some families.

  • When buying the nappies each week you don’t really think of the savings per year just how much you can save for that shop. It’s a tremendous amount that would go towards more important things. I always used cloth nappies because we couldn’t afford the disposable ones for day to day use. We used disposable nappies when going out only.

    • Good on you using cloth nappies !! They’re better for the environment too !

  • They are huge savings. 15 years ago, I went with Huggies for a long time. I did try other, cheaper brands and found they had too much leakage, so kept going back to Huggies. Once my child was a little older, I could then use different brands. I am amazed at the offerings these days and imagine the quality is now much better.

  • wow…over a year thats some amazing savings.
Way back when my kids were in nappies I shopped around and found someone who was selling nappies from their home business. I would order bulk packs and have them delivered to my door. It was excellent.

  • Great to see this price comparison – how about how the nappies and wipes felt though.

  • Currently trying for baby #2 after 8 years. I am so glad I read this because I have been thinking about what nappies we should use and the amount of options are so overwhelming

  • I have positive experiences with Aldi nappies & wipes too.

  • I used mainly cloth nappies for my baby, but did use disposable nappies when travelling and found the Aldi nappies to be great both in value and quality.
