Hello!

I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I have been blessed with 3 boys and I am happy. According to some I shouldn’t be. Why you ask? I don’t have a girl. Whoa that same ‘ol questions that keep popping up. Are you going to try for number 4? Are you saddened you didn’t have a girl?

I get that some people are naturally drawn to a gender or a purpose. Ever heard the ….”If I have one of each I’ll be happy.”

I just wanted babies. I wasn’t fussed about the gender.

FIRST things first. Let us get some perspective on this huge life dilemma that is seemingly facing me.

I have three perfectly healthy children. Big WIN right there.

I have a constant hand me down supply. It’s like my own private Op Shop in the wardrobe.

I don’t have to buy pink-EVER! Bar the occasional lolly or crayon that comes in a box.

I can use feeble excuses for their behaviour like “Oh sorry he just crash tackled your child, aren’t boys cute?”

They can be satisfied with a loaf of bread and a glass of milk- whatever the age.

There are many reasons to be grateful for having children, whatever the gender.

I am grateful that I can walk out of the house and not notice the half stuck piece of toast trailing my backside because someone has lovingly given me a hug and inadvertently stuck it to my clothing. A positive in every negative right?

I am grateful I never have to fumble through a hair do, especially if it involves bobbles. I could never master those hair ties and I’m sure nightmares would be revisited if had to go back there.

I am grateful I will always have someone in the house that can open a jar.

The fart jokes and constant Lego between the toes might be a downside, but it is one I’ll happily live with.

There is never a dull moment.

And ironically just as I say those words, they scream around the corner yelling “HE PUNCHED ME!”

I worry more when they are quiet.

No blood, no broken bones? Right, as you were. Carry on!

  • The last part, the punch, that’s amazing haha.
My husband comes from a family of all boys, much to his mum’s efforts in a girl. I’d always seen myself as a girl mum but knew the odds were stacked against me with hubbies genes. And bam, boy mum, I am! I would love if the next were a girl, but as you have written, as long as they are healthy and happy that’s all I can ask for. Maybe I’ll have a boy who wants to soak his feet with a facemask on along side me, who knows!

  • Happy and healthy is important; I have seen very little difference between boys and girls; both genders like Lego, jokes and playing.

  • Yes I think we can get obsessed about the gender thing. I think if we have healthy children then what’s more to need. I have a friend having her 3rd boy in a few months and my daughter is sad for her “but she would like a girl Mum”. Yes I’m sure she would like a girl but she is just as thrilled to be having another boy. My family has 1 boy and 1 girl and I can definitely see there would be some advantages to having the same sex (I grew up with just 1 sister so 2 girls).

  • I am very grateful to have been given the chance to raise both boys and girls – but if it hadn’t worked that way, I’d still have been grateful to be given the chance to raise any child of any gender.

  • Great to read this – I have friends too with all boys and they say they too often get ‘don’t you wish you had a girl’ they say no 3 children and a husband is plenty LOL. I wonder how I would feel in the same situation. I have a boy and a girl and often get oh your so lucky well done – um thanks I think … LOL

  • I think people are sometimes a bit too obsessed with the whole gender thing! As long as they are happy and healthy babies I say!

  • I get this completely, I have one of each and there was nothing more terrifying than the moment I found out my son was getting a little sister. All that extra worry, all that pink! I was in a complete state of panic for the next 5 months.

  • Thanks for sharing great article and as long as they are healthy that’s what matters in life.

    • Exactly right, health is the most important thing.

  • As long as children are healthy we should be grateful, not take them for granted, and think of those not so lucky
I know one family with 4 boys and the question was continuosly asked “are you going to try again?” Her respnse was “one’s body can only take so much”. Another family had 5 girls. They were healthy and that was all that mattered to them..
