A survey has revealed that nearly half of British children can’t tie their shoelaces.

A poll of 1500 parents with children under the age of 10 found that a staggering 45 per cent knot their laces, with many relying on shoes with velcro straps.

The research conducted by footwear firm, Wynsors World of Shoes, found that of the 55 per cent of children who could tie their own laces, more than third ‘can’t be bothered’, instead simply tucking the laces into their shoes.

The study also found that 42 per cent of children under the age of ten can’t tell the time, 25 per cent can’t use a knife and fork confidently and 44 per cent have no idea how to read a map.

  • Its amazing to me that children struggle with this. They are also losing the ability to use a knife and fork correctly as this seems to be something that people dont teach children anymore.

  • I think its a good idea to teach the kids all of these things before they go to school

  • Before he went to school. We realised he needed to know how to tie up his shoe laces if they came undone at school. It’s just lazy parenting. Nobody wants to teach their kids anything anymore. There are youtube tutorials. Even the laziest parent can access that.

  • Too many parents expect teachers to teach their children everything. As a high school teacher, I had a student who was still wearing velcro shoes…

  • My son is almost 5 and he’s nearly got his laces down, but he’s terrible with a knife and fork. You win some you lose some.

  • My nieces had thin cardboard cut the shapes of shoes with lines showing which way shoelaces to go and holes for the laces go go through. As a kid I remember practised tying the know with and old lace tied to a tap under the back verandah as all the taps inside were too high. Looking back I’m surprised my parents didn’t think of the cupboard door handles.

  • Doing up your shoe laces is an essential skill, I myself am a little lazy and sometimes step into them. But we can’t all be perfect.

  • My 8yr old is better in tying her shoelaces then my 13yr old, who’s actually too lazy to undo them and just wants to step in his tied up shoes.

  • Mine could both tie their laces by the time they started kindy, they were 4. I have to admit, it was my sister in law who taught my eldest. In an ironic twist, her own son couldn’t tie his laces at age 10

  • My kids are 10 and 7 and can’t do theirs either. I’d better get onto it!
