What lengths would you go to get your child into a preferred school?

Parents have gone so far as to set up camp outside a State School in Brisbane’s north-east this week in order to guarantee a spot for their child at the primary school.

Ascot is a well established suburb where the median price of a three-bedroom house is over $1 million.

Families that reside in the catchment area are guaranteed enrolment for their children, but others must vie for the remaining places.

Some desperate parents slept on the footpath, in tents or in swags for more than three nights waiting to submit their enrolment forms, reports ABC news.

One of the fathers said camping out was a necessity to ensure his child’s enrolment.

“It is what it is, it’s what you do for your children. You put your kids first all the time,” he said.

They did not even know whether the school would still have spots available.

“We don’t get anything from the school until we submit the enrolment forms,” one parent said.

They now have a two-week wait to find out if their child’s enrolment has been accepted.

Would you camp out to ensure your child got a spot at a preferred school?

No, I don’t think I would do that.

  • I don’t know which state this refers to but normally children are enrolled before the end of the previous year. For public schools in SA, you are zoned to schools allocated for your area. Some of the Govt. zones aren’t really sensible. For private schools you definitely need to apply during the year before and there is no guarantee your child will be accepted I know a family who put an application for two schools and luckily were accepted at their preferred one.

  • Surely the school should just hand out enrollment forms from their office and give a date when forms should be returned. There should not be any need for camping out.
