The documentary tells Madeleine’s story and explores the mystery still surrounding her disappearance…

It’s hard to say why the Madeleine McCann story continues to capture the hearts and minds of the world. For many people, they feel they can relate to the McCann’s, that it could have been their own family. For others, it’s outrage and disbelief about the botched nature of the investigation following her disappearance. Regardless of the reason, it seems that everyone wants to know what happened to the three-year-old girl who vanished without a trace. A Netflix documentary is set to analyse every part of the case as detectives try to piece together the mystery surrounding Madeleine.

Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare

For those unfamiliar with Madeleine’s story, it started with a regular family holiday. The McCann’s and their three children had travelled to Praia De Luz, Portugal in 2007 to holiday with their friends. On the evening that she vanished, Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, had left her sleeping in the holiday apartment where they were staying, alongside her younger twin siblings, while they went for dinner at a restaurant nearby. Despite the parents taking it in turns to check on the children every half an hour, when Kate McCann went to check on the children at 10 pm she found Madeleine’s bed empty. The thought of looking in on your child only to find their bed empty is enough to make any parent feel sick to their stomach, but that was only the beginning of a twelve-year nightmare for the UK family.

Seeking Justice

For over a decade, the family have publicly appealed for Madeleine’s safe return, but Kate and Gerry McCann have said that they have not been involved in the making of this documentary, and believe it could negatively impact on the investigation. “We did not see, and still do not see, how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, could potentially hinder it,” they said in a statement. “Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the program.”

The global release date for the documentary was kept under wraps for most of the two years since it was commissioned, but the release of a trailer yesterday confirmed its arrival to Netflix as today, March 15.  Whatever your feelings about the attention given to the McCann case, the documentary is sure to be an interesting watch. More importantly, however, we continue to hope that the McCann’s get the answers they are desperately searching for.

  • Imagine if Madeleine sees this. Why was only one child taken?
How much of this documentary is actually true and how much is speculation?

  • Just hope it doesn’t hinder the investigation…or dramatize events creating a fiction that never happened which might mislead the pursuit of truth and resolution to the matter… on the positive side it could reignite the matter for a new generation who might not know about it but who have access to Netflix.

  • I don’t think I’ll watch. It just seems to be profiting from an awful tragedy.

  • There has been so much said about this case that I’m wondering whether this documentary will shed any new information. I sincerely hope Madeline is still alive and will one day be reunited with her family.

  • Not sure what good will come from this documentary, except to maybe raise funds so the parents can keep searching. Such a sad case, but can’t help thinking the parents should never have left the kids alone in the hotel room. That’s just asking for trouble in my opinion. No doubt they themselves are riddled with guilt over it
