Hello!

Today I want to talk about a few things mummy… So for those of you who follow my blogs but who aren’t mummies, hang in there I’ll get to the chick stuff again soon. For those guys who follow my blog, keep reading… you are about to get a fascinating insight into the mummy mind.

I’m sure everyone is aware of an image that floated throughout cyberspace in past months, causing mayhem in its path. It’s of a trim, tanned and happy looking mum in workout gear, with her three small children sitting around her. The catch cry slogan above being ” What’s your excuse?”

I think the general point of this woman’s picture was to create a stir, which is fine if that is the way she wants to improve business. What it did highlight to me however, is an ever increasing trend towards bullying amongst mummies.

Think about it.  This phenomenon has been getting more prevelant over recent years amongst grown women and what’s worse, it now seems to be mummies “bullying” other mummies.

As if it isn’t hard enough when its just you as an individual woman, but add the raging hormones of being a mum and its almost unbearable.

In a nutshell I call it The Mummy Mafia.

It starts as a slight remark about levels of morning sickness being compared or the speed (or lack thereof) of labour and don’t get me started on the comparisons about kids hitting their milestones.

“What do you mean little Timmy isn’t walking yet? My Prudence has been walking for months etc etc.”  ” My Mary has been reading at a fifth grade level since kindy, you clearly aren’t spending enough time with your little James if he is only reading at age appropriate level.”

We then progress into territory that this fitness woman has jumped right into. That dangerous territory that has plagued women since the dawn of time….. their weight.

Naturally this is a topic that is touchy at the best of times, but add to it that your entire life (and hormones) has been turned upside down by one tiny little person and you can imagine the sensitivity.  And I guess that is why this particular image has been so controversial to so many and where it all becomes really disappointing.

I understand that this woman is trying to help others lead healthier lifestyles, but “fat shaming” those who are already struggling with a dramatic change to their body, lifestyle and sanity isn’t being helpful…..it’s being a bully.

Now before you all get up in arms and tell me I am promoting an unhealthy lifestyle, I’m not. I heartily agree that we should all do the best we can to live as healthy a life as possible for ourselves and our family.

What I am promoting is the time to bring an end to the mummy mafia phenomenon. Life as a woman is hard enough, add children, a partner or both and it becomes more challenging again.  As women shouldn’t we be trying to find a way to bond together, and help lift each other up through our shared experience, rather than raising ourselves individually by pushing each other down? Something to think about.

  • I wish we would support each other in this difficult journey called parenthood. Humans are the only species that resort to these low tactics, all other species have other females support and care for the mother and protect the little ones.

    • i agree but it is the times that we live in now

  • The world is made up of various mafias, surrounded by mafia mothers is horrible. Nothing worse than women bitching about others, we need support not to be down graded.

  • I joined a playgroup….thinking this would be great for both my sweet girl and me…. only to find that I returned home feeling deflated, lacking in everything and frustrated. Once I realised the group as a whole seemed to be scoring points off each other (and I wasn’t being paranoid), I left that group & found another which was amazing. Support, fun, support and more fun. It lightened my load considerably.

  • Well said. Women should support and help each other, not pressure, shame and compete with each other! There are far better ways to promote healthy lifestyles.

  • I have to say I have genuinely never seen this in real life. For example, Comparisons have always been reassuring – “yeah, my son has been walking for weeks, but look at how much better yours is at communicating!” The only time I’ve witnessed anything akin to this has been online.

  • Remember the girls at school that you didn’t hang around with? Well, now we’re meeting the grown up version at work or in the mummy mafia. Choose who you hang around with and be civil but not close to those who make you sad, annoyed, miserable, sorry for yourself etc. As fascinating as they may think their imput is, if it isn’t relevant to your own situation, just think of it as spam. Smile and carry on!

  • As a new mumma it saddens me to see women so viciously condemn or criticize other mum’s. By God is hard with our own judgements and without others chiming in.
