Hello!

We all know that toilet paper was the first thing to fly off the shelves during Corona craziness. Whoosh…literally within a day, Australians had become loo paper louts, scratching and kicking people out the way to get stock of that ‘precious’ everyday commodity that is now as rare as diamonds.

Then the same thing happened to hand sanitiser, face masks, tissues and paper towel. Somewhere out there, there are hoarders with houses overflowing with toilet paper and cleaning materials. I hope they get worms!

Big Restrictions!

Supermarkets throughout the country responded by putting tight restrictions on hot property. They introduced limits for in-demand products, they fenced off shelves, added security guards and pleaded for sanity.

Panic!

And we couldn’t help themselves. Seeing empty shelves sent us into a frenzy of panic….there’ll soon be nothing left.

Woolworths and Coles suspended deliveries and pick up (except for the vulnerable) so those with hungry kids to feed are left with no choice but to brave the kilometre queues and hoards of trolley-ramming, angry shoppers fighting over the last frozen packet of peas.

What Haven’t You Been Able To Get From The Shops?

We asked our Mouths of Mums readers what things they haven’t been able to get from the shops. Some of the answers were quite bizarre.

There was, of course, the usual suspects – bread, flour, pasta and sugar.

But now chicken and mince are added to the list of shortages – jeez everyone, how big are your freezers? Mums did share that they managed to get some meat from their local butcher, so maybe this is the way to go.

Medication

Then, of course, there’s also a scary lack of any kind of paracetamol for both adults and children (probably due to the rumour that Ibruprofen wasn’t that great for Coronavirus – not true though!).

One mum said she’d been trying to get Dymadon for over a week now. We managed to get a Chemist’s Own generic brand from our local pharmacy. But any kind of kids’ paracetamol is now behind the counter so you’ll have to go in and ask for it.

Crackers, cereal, potatoes and frozen veggies are in short supply, as is rice, vinegar, eggs and long-life and fresh milk.

Tinned food

The tinned food aisles are looking measly with tinned tomatoes being the most hard to come by.

One mum was shocked that she couldn’t even get almond spread – she said this had never been out of stock before.

Toothpaste, asthma medication and sanitary products are also difficult to get.

And many mums are losing it over the shortage of COFFEE, for goodness sake!

And What About Pets

One of the more strange shortages out there is fish food(!), cat and dog food and kitty litter.

There’s Always Wine

The saving grace for many mums though was that there was still plenty of wine available…and one mum gleefully shared that she was able to get her hands on triple cream brie…pshew!

Emotional Shortages

But some of the best answers we got when we asked mums what they couldn’t get from the shops were…

Common sense, brains, compassion and a smile from anyone…

So true!

  • I had no issues as I simply stayed home and used the supplies I had here.
I was well stocked as my husband had been battling cancer and passed. I was then on my own so the supplies lasted double the length of time.

  • Am so pleased that all the madness of hoarding supermarket staples has finally finished. It never worried me and I was always able to purchase the small amount of goods I needed each week, but I felt sorry for those who couldn’t get their normal groceries. Here’s hoping it has stopped for good finally.

  • Thank God this madness is over but now people are crowding supermarkets which put me right of them

  • So many items are our if stock

  • Definitely emotional shortages! Some people are being very selfish and causing panic with others

  • I have gone from shopping once a fortnight (with milk and bread top ups) to having to shop almost everyday because of the stupid panic buyers causing restrictions! So far I have managed to get toilet paper for anyone that needs it but not for myself. I was shocked to see no soft drinks on the shelf but all the water was full, so strange. Once all the panic settles down all the businesses that have had a boom will end up in gloom as everyone will be living out of their over full freezers and not need to buy

  • I went shopping today and literally all the shelves were bare. Could only get fresh veg and meat but no flour, tinned tomatoes, pasta, rice etc. it’s terrible. How is everyone going to eat all this food they have been hoarding.

    Reply

  • This is sheer stupidity and selfishness to boot!

  • Fresh vegetables like broccoli is hard to get as we usually eat a lot of it and I don’t like frozen. Tin beans is what I can’t get. Oh and my husband wanted twisted liquorice and they had totally sold out of it, they had plenty of the twisted raspberry one though.

  • My local supermarkets do have some items missing, but overall still lots of stock so I’m feeling very lucky at the moment.

  • I am so shocked at how little of the basics are available. I really just hope its not all in a few houses of people that went silly and left nothing for others.

  • All the supermarkets within a 10km radius are sold out of basically most essentials and the weirdest of all, freezer bags. Every single type gone.
