What is the one toy you would ask people NOT to ever buy for your child? We asked the question and you may be surprised by some of the answers.

Unsurprisingly quite a few people said guns and toy weapons. While some said recorders and other noisy toys.

Kinetic sand, paint, glitter, stickers and slime got a strong vote, but some people even said LEGO. Say what?!

One mum shared, “Mine is SQUISHIES! After the scare last year of squishies containing toxic stuff, they are forbidden in our house! Also slime….OMG…I am so over the mess!”

Another said, “Lego. I have countless unopened boxes of it stuffed in the wardrobe.”

Another agreed, “Lego. I’m done with millions of loose pieces.”

One mum said, “Skateboards. But they still buy them for my boys! Think I have got 5 up in the cupboards now lol I just think they are so dangerous.”

Another concerned mum said, “Anything that attaches with a string or line. So afraid of choking.”

“Noisy police cars or fire engines…. Nothing worse than hearing a siren at 3am cause your little one has woken up and decided they want to play with their new cars”, said another.

A couple of people said plastic – “Any cheap piece of plastic crap.”

“Anything that is poorly made and will break within the first day. No landfill please.”

“Dolls, unicorns and any other glittery toys for my twin girls- they hate them (find them boring)”

Even poor old Barbie and jigsaws got a mention!

We loved this mums opinion though – “Nothing. If someone put thought and money into a gift we are grateful.”

Well said! I do totally agree with her on this one. I always tell the kids it’s the thought that counts!

  • I feel bad saying this but whatever my best friend buys my kids!
She said to me she buys presents that are cheap so that people can just throw them away once done and they won’t feel bad about it or think they’ll have to hold onto it for a long time like they would with things that cost more?! I honestly don’t get the reasoning behind that!!!!!!!
I would rather a thoughtful gift that can be passed on or donated so it doesn’t just end up as another piece of dumped rubbish.

  • For babies I would say no stuffed toys as it seems everyone purchased one and we had stuffed toys coming out our ears before my eldest was a year old.

  • Necklace makers. They always drop them on the floor.

  • Anything they got was exclaimed over. They knew anything they got was bought with a lot of thought.

  • I was disappointed that my mum bought my baby his first teddy, I did not even have time to look for one, although he ended up being loved a lot and is still with us 18 years later.
A friend bought the biggest noisiest horrible truck for my son before he was interested in cars, it drove me crazy and I had to get rid of it for my sanity.
Slinkys the ones made of plastic and they play with them up and down the stairs, what a useless time consuming toy.
Anything that makes repetitive noises is always disturbing too.

  • I try to teach my kids indeed that if someone put thought and money into a gift we should be grateful. It’s not about the gift, but about the heart of the giver. Of course we all get sometimes a gift we don’t need. Then we set it aside and re-give it or give it to a charity, no big deal.

  • Makeup for children under 10. They are in a beautiful time of life where perfection can’t be better, and then the parents (not just mothers) want to exceed perfection

  • I think anything that is just needless stuff. Kids seem to have wayyy too much these days.

  • Slime and even playdoh gets annoying and hard to clean. Any of those squishy things too.

  • Anything noisy especially with a high pitched recorded voice.

  • I’ll agree I don’t like guns, so those get put away, oh and slime.

  • Anything ridiculously noisy that will drive everyone up the wall haha.

  • Cabbage dolls – they were never appreciated in our house.

  • LOL Dolls. Man I hate those things. Just plastic garbage that contributes to landfill and poor self esteem for tweens.
