In seven years, ice-related deaths have doubled to 300 a year and instances of ice-addled parents killing their children are becoming shockingly common.

*TRIGGER warning – some readers may find this story distressing.

Experts are warning of a ‘looming national disaster’ after the number of ice users doubled to more than 200,000 from 2007 to 2013.

Glenn Ivers, operations manager at the Australian Anti-Ice Campaign, explained that cases of addicts killing children were often due to psychosis, reports Daily Mail.

‘Users start seeing things and thinking people are coming after them,’ he told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday.

‘In these cases, the babies could represent something that could destroy them. They have no sense of reality. Whatever they see they think is real and they act on it.

‘People can suffer psychosis the first time they use ice because it’s so powerful,’ he added.

‘It takes away all the problems in the world and makes people feel invincible. It takes away rational thought process and takes away the sense of consequence.’

Methamphetamine causes users to act irresponsibly and irrationally, impacts memory and affects a neurotransmitter called dopamine, a chemical in the brain that affects motivation and activity.

Four innocent lives lost

To raise awareness of the damage and pain the highly addictive drug causes, Daily Mail Australia shared the stories of four babies whose lives were taken too soon.

Chayse Dearing was killed by Dwayne Justin Lindsey, 34, at Glenroy while his mother Michelle went shopping in Melbourne on June 26, 2016.

The baby suffered severe traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, marks on his neck, bruising and abrasions on his groin, and retinal bleeding.

Lachlan Bulloch was killed by his mother who had no memory of the crime in January 2014.

The five-month-old suffered severe brain injuries, bruising to his head and neck, and had meth in his system, when he was killed by his mother Melissa Louise Bulloch, 27.

The mother of three pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her son, who was found dead at his Hamilton Hill home, southwest of Perth, in January 2014.

Zayden Veal – Bludgeoned to death by a drug-crazed burglar in 2012.

Casey Veal’s son Zayden was just 10 months old when he was bludgeoned to death by a drug-crazed burglar who broke into their Bendigo home at random, whilst the baby slept in his cot in June 2012.

19-year-old Harley Hicks bashed baby Zayden more than 30 times with a homemade baton during a senseless and unprovoked robbery, fuelled by ice and marijuana.

Baby known as BLGN – Died in her cot after addict mother neglected her in 2014.

The three-month old baby, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died in her cot despite repeated warnings to child services over suspected neglect from her drug addicted mother in 2014.

A court was told when the baby girl was found dead in her cot, there was an ice-pipe above the baby’s bottle warmer and her mother seemed ‘dazed’.

Something needs to change!

  • There was a case in SA a few years ago that Mum put it in the baby’s bottle to help the teething baby sleep. One of his siblings later checked him, discovered he wasn’t breathing and called an ambulance. An extra ambulance crew was called and all got in the transport ambulance. All the way to the hospital they did cpr, administered adrenalin and didn’t open the ambulance doors when they arrived at the hospital. Drs. and nurses were on standby. Some of them rushed out and open the back doors while cpr was continuing to be administered. A cardiologist couldn’t save him either. They all fought so hard to save the baby but it was to no avail.

  • Yes something does need to change and we need to get this dangerous drug off the market, more support for those who want to give it up, and more education at schools to prevent anyone going down this path. I suggest people look up Corey Whites ideas on how to beat this. Politicians are not doing anything except ignoring it. Policing is not working, we need other ways. We need more money going into rehabilitation and prevention measures. Catching the small guys and locking them up does nothing, we need to stop it at it’s source and work with other Governments all around the world to look for ways to combat this man made disgusting drug. Also make it legal for cannabis users who will not kill anyone, let them grow it outdoors and get it off the black market. Plants are not dangerous, man made concoctions are, they use anything to mix with the Ice and it becomes a dangerous mind bending drug. Australia was warned many years ago before it hit our shores and did nothing. Now we are sadly seeing the consequences of communities being destroyed. You cannot even rent a house these days without getting a meth test done on it.

  • My heart bleeds for the poor babies! The story of Zayden is truly terrifying to think that someone could break into your home and do that to the poor child.

  • I would plead with drug addicted parents to please, please put their children in the care of family or friends to spare them any hurt or distress. These defenceless children deserve a chance.
