Sharing your bed with your pooch could see you have a better nights sleep according to new scientific research.

A new study has found that allowing your dog to sleep on your bed can lead to a better nights sleep kiss1065.com.au reports. The study found that while cats and other people could cause sleep disturbance, dogs were unique in helping a person sleep better.

Comfort and Security

962 women in the US took part in the study which examined their sleep quality and sleep routine in relationship to pet ownership and bed sharing. It was found that having a dog share your bed created strong feelings of comfort and security, both conducive to sleep, and far outranked the positive sleep effects of sharing your bed with cats or even your partner! Dog owners also tended to have a better sleep routine. “Dog ownership and its associated responsibilities may cause individuals to adhere to a stricter routine,” the study found. “Keeping to a consistent sleep schedule may be beneficial to dog owners.” If only dogs could also put kids to bed and prevent your partner from snoring!

The Importance of Boundaries

While we think the study proves just how important our dogs are to us,  we also think it’s a good idea to keep some boundaries in place and remember that, as much as they may act like humans, we can’t always treat them like they are.

Having your dog in your bed shouldn’t come at the expense of a positive relationship with your partner or the cleanliness of your sheets!

So if it starts to become more of a hindrance then a help, maybe it’s worth setting up a spot for them on the floor instead.

  • I have my cat, sometimes when he feels like it. I have been looking at getting a dog though so we can go for walks and have a more active friend. I would let them sleep in my bed. I’m single so no worries about enough room.

  • It makes sense, dogs have a calming sense about them. Lots of my friends let their dogs sleep with them.

  • in my past I have had dogs that have slept on the end of the bed (only to find them snuggled under the blankets when I woke up lol!) and I miss that, they were like a weighted blanket on my feet and I knew that I was protected and slept very soundly unless they woke me to go out to the toilet.

I have cats now and children and I find the cats migrate to the girls rooms when they go to bed, so I feel comfortable knowing that my girls have the same little body guards that I did when I was a kid.

If we ever get another dog it will be a big breed dog, so that might not be good for sleeping on the bed but I would be very happy to have them sleep in my room, or alternate between the girls rooms.
