The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical is a delightful spin on an old family classic, it explores the same themes as the movie and book and is sure to not only entertain viewers but teach them important life lessons as well.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory demonstrates the dangers of greed, pride, gluttony and sloth demonstrated by the characters Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Augustus Gloop and Mike Teavee, respectively. It also shows the consequences of a person’s actions, albeit exaggerated in this case, and highlights the idea that you can be a winner only if you play nicely, follow the rules and consider other people as well.

My personal favourite character is Charlie Bucket, a young boy who was born in poverty, despite this, he is a selfless young man who puts before himself the needs of his family. He is the last one who receives a golden ticket because, instead of buying chocolate, he uses the money that he has to buy food for himself, his mother and his grandparents. Despite this, he is taught that nothing is impossible when his dreams of seeing inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory finally come true.

The pairing of impressive and fun choreography with upbeat and catchy songs makes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory such a memorable performance. Even three days later the songs are still stuck in me and my daughters’ heads and we can’t help but burst into song whenever we hear one of the lines from one of the many amazing songs.

Not A Single Dull Moment

In my opinion, due to the abundance of jokes, dances and songs, there is not a single dull moment in the performance. You’re bound to have a smile on your face when you walk out of the theatre with your free golden goodie bag filled with chocolates and the songs and excitement still buzzing in your head.

The highlights of the musical, in my opinion, were The Oompa Loompa Song because it was such a lovely throw back to the movie and was executed in such a creative way and The View From Here, which was such a gentle song, unlike the rest of the upbeat and energetic musical. In all honesty it brought a tear to my eye because that was such an iconic scene and was performed in such a breathtaking way.

Pillows are available to sit on if your child is unable to see over the heads of people in front which is quite helpful for those with younger children and, I assume, it will be very helpful for a lot of the mothers reading this now so if you’ve got your sweet little angel by your side, don’t hesitate to ask for a pillow for them.

To sum it all up, it was a great musical, 10/10 would watch again and, in fact, am even listening to the songs as I write this. I strongly encourage anyone who has an interest in musicals or Roald Dahl to buy tickets to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as it is a must-see musical.

  • Not sure you would be able to get the full effects of the movie into a stage show. I’ve only ever been to one stage musical. Pirates of Penzance. Mum was trying to culturise us girls. Lol, didn’t work
