It’s the age old question… who would you MOST like to have dinner with? Hmmmm let me think…. Marilyn Monroe? Johnny Depp? Well, the way these kids have responded has made me rethink the way my family does dinner.

When faced with this question many adults minds run wild – ohhhh how exciting, can you imagine having Barrack Obama at the dinner table? What would we eat? What would we talk about? Though when these gorgeous kids were posed the same question it gave the world PROOF that dinner time is one of the most important activities in your day.

Watch the heart-warming video here:

After asking my own children the same question I was shocked to find their answer. No it was not one of their My Little Ponies, it wasn’t Taylor Swift and no mention of Justine Clark. It was US – Mum and Dad. Just us.

Well, wow! What a gorgeous feeling. It inspired me to put a little more effort into making sure we all did our best to sit down together every night and focus more on having a little fun around the table.

With the above in mind I decided to try out a few bits and pieces and have since discovered the JOY it has brought back to the dinner table.

Here are 3 ideas for a fun filled family dinner that will create a lifetime of memories.

  1. Make up a story night – ask everyone in the family to come to the table with a story, they tell it and everyone has to guess if the story is true or not. In our family Dad always makes up stories and the kids think it’s the funniest thing EVER. The bonus is that if you play this one enough times AND you guess when your kids are making stories up they’ll think twice before lying to you!
  2. Theme nights – It’s not a new concept but Taco Tuesdays work wonders. You can mix it up and get creative as well, beef stroganoff is a family favourite at our place so we go with a RUSSIAN theme on these nights – get the kids to draw pictures of babushka dolls and the Russian flag and ask them to bring it to dinner. They’re so proud to show off their work and it’s actually a sneaky learning experience – but SHHH don’t tell the kids!
  3. Get creative when ‘plating up’ - there isn’t one adult or child that I know that doesn’t appreciate a funny face in their food. Spaghetti Bolognese is ideal – you can use the pasta for hair, the Bolognese for a face and use herbs to create the eyes and mouth. It’s quite easy to do once you’re thinking about it!

  • I loved this, it was sad, funny, and adorable. We pretty much each dinner together at the table together every night of the week, unless someone has another appointment. It’s always been our rule. We talk about our day while we eat. My son is nearly 15 and I hope to continue this for as long as we can.

  • We always had our evening meal together around the table and the children could each pose a question or theme for the night. It was amazing what subjects we discussed and the littlest one often asked for arithmetic questions so it helped with school work too.
