Hello!

Strawberry jam – it has to be one of the most versatile spreads out there. It’s delicious on warm toast, on scones or dolloped in the belly of doughnuts. But not all jam is equal and there are some pretty bad versions out there (although it’s sometimes hard to tell.) So with the help of the CHOICE team, here are the worst and best strawberry jam in the country.

The CHOICE taste tester panel (best job EVER!) has tested 16 supermarket strawberry jams from brands including Aldi, Bonne Maman, Coles, Cottee’s, and Woolworths, to discover exactly which products you should add to your trolley.

“Our experts conducted a blind taste test of 16 different kinds of jam, judging them on appearance, aroma, flavour and texture,” says CHOICE food writer, Rachel Clemons.

The Best Strawberry Jam Overall

It’s not too much a surprise that the jam that took top honours in flavour, was actually a homemade strawberry jam. The homemade microwave strawberry jam, created by CHOICE home economist Fiona Mair, scored an impressive 85% in the taste test. Get the recipe here.

This easy homemade jam cost about $5.30 for a 400g jar (or $1.30 per 100g) to make, although it would cost less in summer when strawberries are cheaper.

However, not everyone has the time or inclination to turn fruit into jam at the cooktop and fresh strawberries can be pricey, especially when they’re not in season. So, let’s put aside the homemade variety and focus on the best strawberry jam on the supermarket shelves.

The Best Strawberry Jam (Supermarket)

Good to know: This jam is 51% strawberries, and contains 99% Australian ingredients. It’s also one of the more expensive products in our review.

“Glossy, natural colour. Beautiful, strawberry/lemon aroma. Sweet strawberry flavour with some acidity. Lots of seeds.”

Rose’s Strawberry Conserve

Worst Strawberry Jam

Aldi Grandessa Strawberry Conserve

CHOICE score: 36%
Price per 100g: $0.28

“Our judges weren’t too fond of Aldi’s Grandessa Strawberry Conserve, which came in at last place,” says Clemons. “The texture of this jam was quite grainy, and it had quite an artificial smell and flavour.”

Where is your jam made?

Just five of the products in our test were made in Australia:

  • Aldi Grandessa Strawberry Conserve.
  • Beerenberg Australian Strawberry Jam, both IXL products.
  • Natvia’s Fruit Spread.

But just because they’re made in Australia, doesn’t mean they’re made from Australian ingredients. Only two contain a very high proportion of Australian ingredients: Aldi Grandessa at 90% and Beerenberg at 99%. The other three have less than 60% Australian ingredients.

So where else does your jam come from?

Aldi’s premium Grandessa Signature jam is made in Belgium, as are all three of Woolworths’s products.
Barker’s, Cottee’s and Rose’s are made in New Zealand.
Coles products are made in Poland.
Bonne Maman and St Dalfour are made in France.

  • Not surprised by the number one, beerenburg is one of my go to for jams. I can’t believe how low cottees was rated, that was my fave growing up.

  • The best Australian jam I came across is at a farmers market. The label was Quincey Jones Jelly Preserves and they had a load of really interesting flavours like Strawberry & Pimms Jam, Fig & Earl Tea Jam, Raspberry & Liquorice Jam, Blackberry & Chambord Jam, and Lime & Gin Marmalade. I tried all of these and they were amazing. They had no preservatives or artificial ingredients and all had a fruit content over 70% and was therefore really low sugar and tasted of real fruit. I was really happy to find our they sell online too to anyone in Australia via their website http://www.qjj.com.au I really recommend them to anyone.

  • Ironically my 3 fave strawberry jams are Beerenberg, Barkers, and the cheap Aldi one that scored last lol these 3 have to be the best tasting, and the less chunks of strawberry the better! I hate trying to spread it and all I get is chunks of fruit blahhh but yes give the cheap Aldi one a go, it’s way better than what the judges ranked it!

  • My amazing 3 year old decided to “make jam” last night, by squishing his strawberries in the carpet and lounge. He was so proud of himself, it took all my energy not to be upset with him! I did ask him to help me clean it up. Our little chef!!

  • We usually buy Bonne Maman and St Dalfour interesting they are both made in France. I would agree the Beerenerg and Aldi Grandessa are the best after homemade with the above options.

  • Cottees hands down for the kids it’s the only jam they eat. For me I like to buy local home made and not massive chunks. I like it smooth.

  • Yum! I have the best strawberry jam in my fridge right now. I’m not really a big jam eater but it is nice sometimes on an English breakfast muffin or on scones with cream.

  • Usually make my own jams, but Beerenberg has so many wonderful foods that I’ll try that one when I run out. Thanks for posting Choice’s recommendations.

  • I’m not really surprised by these results. Beerenberg make such good quality products. I haven’t tried their jams. So I will now. Wonderful to see Australian produce performing so well too :)

  • The last time I had jam it was IXL. No one in the family likes jam now so I don’t buy it. I used to make a satsuma plum jam from the plums off our self seeding plum tree. Don’t think I ever tried one as good as that.

  • I love Bonne Maman jams. They have beautiful chunks of fruit in them. They have such a large variety available and are well priced for what you get. Delicious on scones.

  • I would have liked to see preservative and additives compared in this review.
Beeranberg would probably still come out on top!?
