A private school in Melbourne will make pants compulsory for junior school girls.

Kindergarten, prep, and grade one students at Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School in Essendon will no longer have the option of wearing a pinafore, shirt and tie.

The younger students will wear shorts and a legging-style pant in a push to increase their level of physical activity through the day.

“We were keen to re-think the purpose of the uniform,” principal Elisabeth Rhodes told 9News.

“It is more contemporary, it gives girls autonomy… and promotes more movement. It’s a winner in the minds of parents and the girls themselves.”

Ms Rhodes now hopes other independent schools will follow suit.

“Principals are cognisant of that fact it is important for girls to be active, so I’m sure we will see more of it in the future.”

Do more schools need to follow their lead?

  • The public school my kids went to had longs and shorts for all the kids and we are going back 30 years now when they first started there. Guess the school was progressive.

  • I agree that they should be allowed a choice.

  • There should be an option and a length on school skirts and dresses

  • They should be allowed to choice which uniform they want to wear.

  • I wish this had been an option when I was at school.i would have preferred pants over skirts and dresses. Why not give kids the choice?

  • I think the young girls should be given a choice. I would have chosen to wear shorts or pants that’s for sure

  • I would prefer if the girls were given a choice. Personally a dress or loose type of clothing is so much cooler in summer – appropriate types of underwear need to be worn.

  • Wow things were soooooo different back when I was at school!!! Looking back now I think we were more lucky, not just because we could wear whatever we wanted but because it was the norm to walk the hour home from school safely xx

  • I think that they shouldn’t ban the school dress ..
But I think it’s a good idea to have the girls wear pants when they play sports.

  • I don’t think the dress should be banned but giving them the option of pants or dress is a great way to go.

  • Pants or dress is ok. Both are ok, aren’t they.

  • Why do they have to ban the dress? Can it still not be an option to choose from? Let’s create choice rather than ban.

  • I agree that girls should have the ‘option’ to wear shorts and trousers but to also to be able to wear dresses if they choose to. That way they can still have the option of displaying their personalities through a limited uniform. My daughter’s school offer shorts, skort, dress, trousers and pinafore. My daughter (8) has all options available to choose from, most days she chooses to wear either her skort, dress or pinafore (season depending) as she is prefers to wear that style of clothing. These do not limit her style of play at all and she wears bike shorts or stockings underneath.

  • A dress never stopped me from playing. I much prefer the look of skirts and dresses personally.

  • Fantastic, more schools should definitely do it, I still remember how uncomfortable and restrictive school dresses were in the 1970’s, could not wait until I got home to take it off and wear something comfortable so I could play outside.
