Reports that photos of British school children, some as young as five, are being harvested from social media accounts and shared across a Russian ‘paedophile website’.

Images of pupils from eight primary and secondary schools in Scotland were found on the website described as a global ‘meeting place for paedophiles’ that attracts 20million visitors each month, shares Daily Mail.

The photos were taken from official school social media accounts and posted by anonymous users who bragged about being sexually attracted to children.

The photos were innocent, showing kids’ academic and sporting achievements, but they featured alongside extreme images of babies and children from around the world.

In many of the images, children were holding certificates with their names on, meaning they could be easily tracked down.

The site, run from the city of St Petersburg, was described by US law enforcement as as ‘popular for trading child pornography’.

The Scottish Government said there were no nationwide rules around schools’ use of social media.

A spokesman said councils should ‘fully exercise responsibility for the care, safety and welfare of all pupils in school’.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman urged schools to take better safety precautions.

Does your school have a strict policy about what images they share online?

  • What a horrible thought. Would hate to think of pedaphiles using these pictures.

  • Not sure what the local school policy is for this, my kids finished school before the social media shit storm. I know a lot have permission slips for parents to sign and return. My grandson is at childcare and they have an app that you login to so you can see regular pics of the kids and what they get up to

  • I imagine their parents consented to the photos but names definitely should not be visible

  • I don’t think it is safe to post photos of your kids online on any platform but certainly not when name is clearly visable as well as the school they attend.

  • Scary stuff. You never know where images of children put online might end up. Also, sometimes there might be a threat of DV, where for example the mother might not want her ex to know where their child goes to school.

  • I don’t like certain people I know being able to look at my kids on the school Facebook page, with 2 different accounts which blocked me. My own mother. No privacy and they have rules about other parents not posting without permission but I’ve seen them do it with myself and my child/ren in the photo without my permission.

  • The schools of our kids only shares with parental permission.
I don’t think this is a safety/security issue only. This has everything to do with the super crafty sick minds of the hackers.
May all these sick minds of hackers and child pornography get caught and heavily sentenced.

  • This is truly disturbing and horrifying. My daughters been in the school newsletter a few times and it is available on the schools website for anyone. I will be raising this with the school

  • Part of my heart just broke. This is beyond awful! I wish the Mark Zuckerburgs of this world would somehow make a program that tracks people who visit sites like this and pass it on the authorities
